I don't think his defense is particularly bad. He was very defensive vs Lemieux so i have no clue what OP is talking about. I think he picks and chooses with opponents that he lets his guard down with and i also think he does this as strategy to land big shots.

 

You can't win that many amatuer fights with a bad defence. I haven't really seen him in the amateurs to see if he is still as sharp.....

 

He has no defense. But his fans think he's unbeatable. Tonite was proven otherwise and definitely the stop was premature. If a WW could do that, imagine what a proven elite like Canelo would do? I think Canelo in Brooks place tonite would have been a pasting. I think This proved he's the most overrated fighter since prince Naseem hamed.

His level of defensive effort is directly proportional to how much of a threat he deems the other guy's power. That's obvious.

Don't take the bait. The same guys ragging on him for getting hit would be ragging on him if he boxed conservatively and won on points. Gennady fights for the paying fans, not to win over Internet trolls. If he doesn't think the other guy is a threat, why not put on a show?
