I dont get it, but i havent been following both of these guys' careers as much as some on here so can people help me out here with SUBSTANCE; not just 'ohhh rjj is over the hill' type bull****. im honestly seeing rjj winning this one on combos and handspeed. it seems that rjj has the advantage stylistically. jones has clearly come up short in his last two fights due to a well placed shot by green that wont be replicated by hopkins, and then simply facing a dude with too much output for jones at this point in his career. his stock has massively diminshed because of this, whereas hopkins stock is sky high, and it feels that this is the reason for the overwhelming belief that hopkins got this one. or what am i missing here? Please, other than LukeO whos gonna spew childish bull**** regardless, can everyone else keep it to substance as far as your boxing brains allow?
No doubt that Roy Jones is a better athlete than B Hop, even at this age. And I don't give a damn if B Hop gets up and runs 10 miles every day, swims across Lake Ponchatrain and spars 15 rounds. It's just that Roy isn't the athlete that he USED to be, so B Hop see this as a great opportunity to take out a man who's too stubborn or too old to learn the fundamentals of the game. It all depends on how they fight, but I presume B Hop is going to be his typical self, and try to induce Roy to attack him, and that's when B Hop will strike. Typically Roy doesn't get hit with left hooks because he holds his arms way out in front of his face, but if he becomes the aggressor, B Hop will set up traps and lead him right into them. It could actually turn out to be boring. Then again, if B Hop is the aggressor, B Hop might get too aggressive for Roy to handle, close the distance, and loop a punch to knock him out. Either way, while it's not impossible that Roy manages to overwhelm and older Hopkins with his hand speed and combinations, it is highly unlikely, because Roy's defense will once again let him down.
I just think Hopkins is the overall better fighter at this point of their careers. Roy looks good against the Sheikas and Lacys, because they are sitting ducks, Roy won't be letting his hands go like that. I honestly think Roy is gonna have trouble pulling the trigger against Hopkins, will give him too much respect and not win enough rounds.
But then again, not pulling the trigger may work in Roy's favor because it would cause Hopkins to be aggressive, which honestly is something that he can do, but I don't think it's in his comfort zone, especially as a guy who obviously tries to do everything in his power to avoid getting hit.
I just think Hopkins is still an A level fighter, Jones has not looked good against an A level fighter in years. Hopefully this is the fight where Hopkins finally starts to look old. And if Jones were to somehow pull it off, he should retire. That would be a sweet note to end a great career that had many ups, a few downs.:yep
Roy isnt as great as he used to be, his reflexes and strength have dropped considerably. it took him 5 rounds to stop an old version of omar sheika whilst Calzaghe who in his prime wasnt nearly as heavy handed as Roy in his prime managed it in the same amount of time when Sheika was younger. Took lacy out but it was a corner stoppage and no doubt they were getting pissed of with lacys performances since Calzaghe and if roy tries using his handspeed in this fight hopkins is gonna hug hold and spoil like he did against calzaghe and taylor. Still that being said Jones to be Hopkins via SD. Close fight but still Jones has enough to be Bernard but only just
what youre saying here is my problem. u said "u just think hopkins is an A class fighter and jones hasnt looked good in years". i feel people are using this exact line of thought in assessing the fight, when none of it is even slightly relevant, unless u think jones has lowered confidence. id agree with u on what u said. but once again jones didnt look good because he was caught bad by green which wont happen in the next fight, and joe had wayyyy too much output and that was all that won him the fight.....and again hopkins doesnt have that output at all. and then u have hopkins who only looks so great not because he hit pavlik a whole load of times, but because pavlik couldnt find him AT ALL in that fight, and i think jones' combos, handspeed, and movement will definitely land leather even if not hurting shots. if this is the only/main reason people are pushing hopkins in this fight, then ima have to throw a nice bet on a jones points victory due to styles
Finally! a good thread were grown-ups can talk boxing. I'm one of the few who believes that Roy is still good enough to make this interesting, and I thought Hop looked terrible against Ornales, with that and the fact that father time could show up I believe this isn't the blowout some expect, the only real advantage I'd give to Hopkins is his confidence but this could hurt him cause he may be over-confident and Hop isn't a knock-out type of guy so the Roy who fought Lacy could outwork him. Think about it.
Hopkins definitely doesn't deliver consistant pressure, and the guys that beat Roy, aside from Tarver of course, are guys who put on pressure. So a Roy win is not out of the question, but due to Roy's inability to adapt to, and Bernard's knowledge of the game combined with his discipline and resolve, it seems like it's very unlikely on paper. But the reality is that both men are slowing down, and there is always a possiblity that Jones could pull off a huge upset. It would just be interesting to say the least what B Hop would have to say if he DID in fact get knocked out by Jones.
I hear ya.... Roy is my favorite fighter, but I just have a hard time picking against Hopkins after that dismal performance against Green... I know Green is a hard punching CW that fights nothing like Hopkins, but just being knocked out in the first round makes me reluctant to pick him against any decent fighter, let alone Hopkins. I thought Green was a dumb fight anyway, should have went straight to B.Hop after Lacy, I would be more confident.
Because Jones can't take a punch and is scared to take a punch. Have you not seen what has happened to Jones when he fights someone that is not shot? He gets obliterated.
because? u said it yourself, hopkins wont hit him like that. and jones didnt have a 'performance' for u to call it dismal. he got hit right away, real bad....so what are u taking from that fight? really? other than lowered confidence which i dont think RJJ will allow himself to have given his past, i see absolutely zero relevance in that and i think its skewing people's objective thinking.
