Why is Ingo Johansson in the Hall of Fame?

In June 1963,

3-weeks before Cassius Clay took on Henry Cooper, he went on an
excursion to Gothenburg, Sweden to particpate in a 5-Round sparring
session with INGO.

After Cassius danced and jabbed for 4-Rounds, INGO decided he had
enough of this 'show', and in Round 5, and dropped Cassius with the 'Toonder' right hand.

I still say that isn't Ali in the photo and I've never, until now, read ANYTHING about his dropping Ali (Clay) into a puddle with 'Toonder' in 1963.
Give me legitimate links to support this or else drop your claim.

 

This sparring session is 'not' to be confused with the 1961 sparring session in
Miami Beach, the 'publicity stunt'.

When Cassius Clay arrived in London, England in early June 1963 to fight Henry Cooper
(Tuesday Night - June 18, 1963) he took a 3-day excursion to Sweden.

There were rumors flying around that INGO might come back against Cassius, if Clay got by Ol 'Enry.

The 'two' put on a 5-Round exhibition in Gothenburg, in front of 5000 pre-invited guests,
at the Gothenburg Theatre, and the event was not open to the boxing press.

Cassius showed his speed, and danced 'brilliantly' for 4 Rounds. In the 5th Round,
Clay started to 'showboat, and INGO whipped the right hand, square on the button
and felled Cassius.

There was 'no count', as this was nothing more than an exhibition, with a celebrity
Referee as the 'third man in the ring'.

Cassius was accompanied to Sweden with American Boxers - Jimmy Ellis and Don Warner,
as well as Angelo Dundee and two other associates.

But...that is not Ali in that photo, I'm guessing 'white-guy'.
I'm not sure of the London date with Ingo (early-63) but, if he had done that to Cassius, why didn't he jump right back into the fray?
I need more substinative links before I buy into this one.

 

As you know, INGO had gotten medical reports from his physicians to 'not' return
to the ring, after his bout with Brian London on April 21, 1963.

If INGO did return, it would have been for 'one fight only' versus Cassius Clay, and in
Stockholm, Sweden - and in the summer of 1963.

After the June 18, 1963 bout with Henry Cooper, Cassius Clay returned back to the
United States.

INGO then decided to retire a short time later.

INGO also turned down a bout with Sonny Liston in both September and December 1963,
with a $1,000,000 fight purse offer.

 

He was massively popular and was the first scandinavian hw champ.

Atleast douglas spent a while as the best hw. He also owns victories over tyson, mccall, page and some other's I can't remember right now.

European ratings in the Ring magazines at the time were laughable. Second and third-raters, whose names are long forgotten even by historians.

 

Yes, I think RING magazine used to throw in a few Europeans to the top 10s just on some sort of quota basis.
Fighters who were underserving got ranked.
Unfortunately, some of the better Europeans probably got overlooked.

Ingemar Johansson was obviously the real deal though, as he proved.

I'd like to see more footage of the Clay v Johansson thing from 1961.
I suspect it's been mythologized a bit.
On the small clip I've seen it looks like Johansson is leaning back and slipping Clay's punches too. This goes against the claims that Clay "made a ****** out of Ingo" for the entire duration of the event.
More likely, he looked a lot better than you'd expect from a 4-fight novice.
