If you watch Tysons KOed opponents tend to struggle to make the count sometimes they did other times they didnt, the point is they were awake within 10 seconds.

Where as Rocky Marcianoes KOed opponents where put to sleep alot longer, waking up long after the ten count had finished few of them, and unable to stand etc

Its like Rocky was doing alot more damage than modern heavyweight punchers!

not just marciano, guys back then got put out like that a lot in all of the divisions from the biggest to the smallest. much more full, true 10 count knockouts from that era and other past eras, not as many referee stoppages as today at all

now how are we to account for this

But given that Marciano was facing similiar sized opponents as was Tyson wouldn't that nulify the size difference? If I'm understanding the OP's question it's why is that 185lbs Marciano hits another 185lbser and has him out for ages while 220lbs Tyson hits another 220lbs and has him out for a little bit. As for the question who knows could be due to:

Smaller gloves, worse chins, Marciano hitting harder P4P, Marciano hitting the right spot more often, fact that Marciano usually grinded down his opponents which would make recovery slower and other such things.

Marciano worked his ass off in training to get DOWN to 189 lbs. They had a heavy bag made especially for him...it was almost 300 lbs.The Rock had to really bang it to make it move..he hit like a much bigger man...he almost killed Carmine Vingo in 1949...Vingo needed a cane and never fought again...shearing Rex Layne's teeth off at the nubs...smashing Lee Savold's teeth up into his gums...Roland LaStarza having to have surgery on his arms to remove blood clots that formed after his beatdown from Rocky in 1953...it took some guys weeks to get over a beating at the hands of Marciano...

Well I suppose, however Marciano also has 4 ATGs on his resume, Tyson just the 1

You also have to look at what round the knockout came in. Rocky got late round KOs and Tyson got early round KOs, for the most part. It also probably doesn't hurt that some of the Rock's competition were in their forties.

I don't the two are comparable. Love the Rock, but Tyson would kill any 185lb opponent.

Marciano's stoppages came from big shots to cap off ridiculous sustained beatings.

You were generally safe from Mike if you made it far enough. His game was to catch you early with his speed and explosiveness and switch your lights.

Also, Rocky put Walcott to sleep, in that particular example, with a hellacious right hand, possibly the single best landed shot in heavyweight history. That'll separate a man from it.

    It's not rocket science guys...

Smaller gloves + past prime opposition= devastating knockouts.

    The truth hurts.

Probably talking about Holmes since most (sadly) don't rate Spinks at HW... nor do they have any idea of how good he was at 175. They just know that he got humiliated by Mike and that his brother is a bit of a punchline nowadays...
