Why is it so rare for a lighter fighters to stay at one weight their whole career?

    Because a lot of them start young and cut a lot of weight. As they age they gain muscle mass and it's harder to cut.

    Your body tends to grow as you get older.

    Plus, people enjoy eating more of the foods they actually like.

    The above, plus there's usually more money the higher you go. (To a certain point, say FW to WW.)

    ..plus, it's not easy to be a pound-for-pound elite by sticking in a single division, especially if we want to discuss flyweights.

    Most of the above and also a few other factors, increasing bone density with age, water retention, difficulty dehydrating then re-hydrating after weigh in. Also the disparity in weight classes is much smaller in the lighter weights so they are more likely to transcend a greater amount of divisions than a naturally bigger fighter as they age and get heavier.
