Why is Jhonny Gonzalez so obsessed with a Mares rematch?

The guy knocked him out in the first round, have you ever seen someone do this and actually be so eager to get back in the ring with the same person? Constantly calling out someone you already stopped is not a good look IMO

Move on Jhonny and look for bigger and better things. You proved that your the better fighter, stop being a bully

Has he? I don't think he's the one that has actively pursued the fight. It's Mares that immediately said that he wanted a rematch, faked an injury, made zero effort to reschedule, and recently started talking about Jhonny again.

The same reason Prescott has been chasing Khan.

Doing it twice erases all the "fluke" talk, brings in a huge paycheck, and cements his legacy all in one fell swoop.

(the main difference being that Gonzalez has toiled for years and shouldn't need Mares once, let alone twice, in order to get money/fame/recognition...whereas Prescott really is a one hit wonder)

Slightly off-topic, but did Jhonny ever chase a rematch w/ Nishioka? He was knocked out on his own turf.

Yes but he doesn't have no options like prescott, plenty of other good options for him. Not just mares

No, he would have needed to go to Japan. (since Nishioka had all the bargaining leverage with the belt and the h2h KO win - not to mention Nishioka vs. Gonzalez was only his third bout of forty in his career outside of Japan)

None that are as all-around attractive, in terms of money, doability, prestige, and legacy. (regardless of whether some options might be higher in one category or another)

I guess, still just doesn't seem right to me. Let Mares get a few more wins under his belt and build the rematch as revenge for Mares. Pushing for it so quickly just makes him come off as a bully to me.

He's been beating up Mares for years, he's the Vernon Forrest to Abners Mosley. No matter how hard Mares tries, the blood, sweat, and tears, Jhonny boy is gonna **** him up. Jhonny is going to send abner back to flyweight so he can fight Giovanni segura.

Because Mares could still very well beat and upset anyone else that isn't Gonzalez. Gonzalez is in the twilight of his career, he might be the first to claim he has Abners number, but we won't know that until theres a rematch. Or mares can blow him to smithereens in a rematch. We don't know yet.

He can fight Walters, Gradovich or Lomachenko.

    All are pretty big fights
