I just checked, and it was a Thursday night. I ordered that fight. My wife and I got back from our honeymoon the day before. But I didn't go back to work until the following week. Yeah, the Saturday night fight sort of started when HBO began airing fights in the 1980s. It was usually on other nights when it was on network TV or closed circuit. In the closed circuit era, most fights tended to be broadcast during a weeknight because they were shown in movie theaters or arenas, and most people were still in the city for work, so they'd just go over to the theater to watch the fights. If they were living in the suburbs, the thought was they wouldn't return to the city to watch a fight on a screen on the weekends. I still have my ticket stub for the Ali-Holmes closed circuit telecast, which was on a Thursday night, too. I think all three Ali-Frazier fights were on weeknights. I know Ali-Spinks 1 and Ali-Shavers were, because those were other fights everyone was talking about in school the next day. In fact, I don't recall any Ali fights airing on a Saturday night. He always seemed to fight during the week. Because those are the nights most people watch TV.
ok...it was thursday! couldnt remember exactly thought might have been a wednesday...i remember being 9 at the time and my father ordering the fight on a school night lol...
The only good thing about that card was we invited some friends over. And we cut up 12 slips of paper and numbered them one thru 12. And we all threw money in a hat. And we drew the slips. And if the fight ended in the round you picked, you won all the money. And if someone picked 12, they'd get the money if it went to a decision. And I picked the slip that had the number 3 on it. Otherwise, I'd have been pretty ****ed that Douglas didn't try to get up. I was the only one there who wanted him to stay down.:deal
