Norris pushed HIMSELF to the top with wins over Mugabi, Leonard, Curry, Brown, Taylor, and cleaned out his division and decisive, never any controversial decisions we saw in Leonard's fights, that bogus stoppage over Benitez, etc If Leonard reached the end of his career that night it was becuz he was facing Norris who abruptly ended it becuz Ray was perfect in his previous fight with no end in sight :yep sorry but it's true Ray only had 30 + fights. that's not a long career and at age 38, Floyd is still winning, that's why you dont hear excuses coming from his fans and whether you believe me or not is irrelevent.Leonard ducked Pryor and maybe Curry becuz we dont see them do we? We see Lalonde. He went CHASING after Lalonde but Hagler had to wait five years or is it six? anyhow, you can hear the comments on the tape, round six Tim Ryan "Sugar Ray said he was counting on the slowness of Hagler and said that he lost a lot of speed" that's why he literally pursued the match after telling the Hagler camp NO a dozen times. I'm sorry but hat excuse is gone you are **** out of luck there! and even while in action, there's no fight with Nunn, another speedy up N comer, like Norris. once placed in action against a Nunn like opponent (Norris) Leonard clearly floundered - floundered against those with superior athletic ability N agility, speed, reflexes. it's why he couldnt fight Hagler in the first place. he wanted to but knew he'd lose so he decided to come back under the guise of an injured eye with the option to come back, thus allowing him to stay out of action all of the above reasons are why I think Leonard wouldnt have done wellin Robinson's era, or Napoles' I could be wrong but there's toomuch circumstantial evidence which in his case is very damaging looka at Ali. he couldnt be in boxing becuz his title was taken, not becuz he didnt have the stomach for fighting.
Name fighters who were past prime. Norris was a dirty fouling china chinned arsehole who blazed briefly and was then snuffed out.
Norris was a great athlete who was very dangerous at his best but he is no SRL. Leonard defeated all time greats and he did it in a multitude of ways. Whether he used flashy combos to steal rounds late against the slower hagler, or turn slugger against Hearns or box brilliantly against a savage Duran. His ability to adapt transcended raw athletic talent(and I was not a fan) and solidified him as an ATG.
dont allow the bitterness to get the better of you. Terry was great. just accept it like I did He fought the way you are supposed to when you are the faster boxer you move, you keep him off balance, you paint him up N down and that's what Terry DID He was brilliant the problen is that he proved it against your favorite fighter I dont deny Terry was a dirty fighter. so was Hector Camacho becuz he would hold Leonard's head with one and strike with the other. it's called holding N hitting which you are not supposed to do but there was nothing anyone could do about it cuz Hector was clever and made it so the ref couldnt see him do it that fight was a throwback to Hector's young days besides, Leonard was a dirty fighter himself, throwing Hagler a groin shot in the 4th. I didnt see no one object and didnt see the ref do nothing about it in fact, the Las vegas crowd rose to its feet when Ray punched Hagler in the groin Why should I care if Terry punch Ray while he is down? He deserves it! Ray & his fans got no qualms when Ray fights dirty, that's why he got away with punching Hagler after the bell with combinations they only get mad when another guy do it to Ray
He sure didnt adapt to Norris Did he? Leonard was a great welterweight but he couldnt deal with young fast boxers with fast feet N fast hands seriously, how many examples you really have? One? two at the most? Hagler was shot and blantantly avoided the best p4p fighter for five yeas Duran 40 lbs overweight which recently shed in time for the fight, ten of them in the last 3 days alone Hearns was 3 years from his prime and rapidly growing out of the welters. still a good win but............ ....was Joe Louis in HIS prime for the first Schmeling fight? I suppose you always have benitez but he's not exactly Terry Norris who put the fear of God in opponents with his speed N power if Ray wanted to prove how great he was, he'd have Terry's head on a platter but instead all we get are excuses Floyd's 4 yeard older YET, and unlike Million Excuses Leonard, he's stilll winning RESULTS are what count
Ray Leonard isn't even in my top 25 favourite fighters. Doesn't stop me objectively recognizing he was a great champion.:good
Ray, ducked pryor & curry. Stop this lunacy, did aaron accept a career best purse? Ray had a retina injury, or am i imagining things!!! Your judging ray against norris & hector?
"a career best". so that's how you want to frame the question Did Ray likewise accept a purse under 1 mil? If Aaron takes 500 K, then ray must likewise accept around the same amount based on what promoter ray figures how much public interest he can draw Last I checked, Ray got 13 mil for fighting someone named Lalonde, - an anonymity, and picked up two titles while doing it. lalonde didnt have two titles at the time atsch EXPLAIN! so, does Ray get to decide what Aaron gets? Is Ray the promoter of the fight? Also, if the reason is a detached retina, why was he inactive the same year given the go ahead to continue shouldnt he have resumed right after given permission when he's younger rather than waiting 5 more years then fighting on till the age of 40? EXPLAIN! Also, why shouldnt I judge Ray limitations based on those fights with Hector & Norris? Arent fights won and lost in the ring? If Ray is the overwhelming favorite (as Hagler was against Leonard), shouldnt Ray LIKEWISE mop the floor with Norris? He had a huge edge in experience and besides that, no one from the press picked Norris to win, in contrast with the Hagler-Leonard fight Ray hadnt lost a fight in 11 years (same as Hagler) was untouched in his last fight, winning all twelve rounds was fighting at a lighter weight and thus making him even faster had no layoffs which would lead to ringrust only had 30 plus fights, meaning he was relatively fresh and ready to go was the one who pursued the fight with Norris, meaning he wanted the fight Floyd is 38, as compared with Ray's 34, and has had many more fights than Ray, and still hasnt lost If ray deserves to be compared with Floyd, he should at least win a fight he is expected to win becuz BEATING Norris is much more of an accomplishment that losing to him Ray Leonard should have beat Norris come on punk, speak up! You started this, now let's see you defend your view! all time greats dont get spanked by washed up feather fisted junior lightweights like Hector Camacho, and make them look like raging brawlers by comparison still want to continue this? If not, just do what your average punk would do - shut your mouth and make yourself scarce
that may be, he just cant adapt to someone like Nunn, or Norris and relied on a good 5 years of erosion before considering his chances with Hagler to be realistic that lowers his standing and why he must take a back seat to more worthier champions he will always play second fiddle to Robinson
I've always liked and admired Sugar Ray Leonard, but truthfully Ray Robinson and Henry Armstrong should be the #1 and #2 welters. Leonard at #3 is more reasonable.
You're fvcking crazy dude! It's all opinion... this whole forum, any all-time ranking list. Nothing can really be proven. Just because one fighter has more wins, or was a World Champion longer, or whatever criteria you want to use... it doesn't mean (or prove)that one fighter was better than the other. Riddick Bowe beat Evander Holyfield (W12) once and lost to Holyfield (L12) once in HW World title bouts. In defenses he stopped a washed up Michael Dokes KO1 and journeyman Jesse Ferguson KO2. In WBO HW World title fights he beat Herbie Hide KO6 and Jorge Gonzalez KO6. Other than the win over Holyfield it really isn't all that impressive... but you'd be an idiot if you didn't think that a prime Bowe had the ability to give any HW in history a tough fight. I'm not going to rank Tommy Burns ahead of him just because Burns had more title defenses. Back to Leonard. The TKO over Benitez was a good stoppage in my opinion. What else can really be said about it? Had Benitez went the distance he would not have deserved the decision. The stoppage over Hearns was seen as a bit early by many people. Hearns may have been able to continue a little longer but he was severely hurt. I don't know that he would have finished the round... and there was still one more round to go. I doubt Hearns could have stayed on his feet thru the remainder of the 14th round let alone the 15th round. With that in mind, add up your scorecard now, make sure you deduct the right amount of points from Hearns because I'm sure he'd go down again. 10-8 in the 13th, 10-8 or maybe even 10-7 in the 14th, 15th? 10-8 or 10-7??? That's if Hearns could have even been up at the end of the fight. Duran? The first fight was close. A great performance by both. Leonard fought well but he didn't fight smart. Leonard was much better in the rematch even if Duran was not. He frustrated Duran and Duran quit (much like Liston did vs. Ali). Hagler? Leonard had fought once at 154 and never at 160. He had not fought in 2 years and only had fought once in the previous 5 years (and didn't look very good in that fight). the fight was close but I thought Leonard won. A great win in my opinion. Hearns II? Good fight and I thought Hearns did enough to win it. Hearns didn't go down but he was rocked and hurt in several rounds. Leonard did go down twice... that doesn't guarantee a win though. Napoles fought the "great" Tony Perez 3 times, going life and death with him twice. He also lost to guys named Hilton Smith, Alfredo Urbina (he did stop Urbina in the 1st round of their rematch), and LC Morgan LKOby4 (he did stop Morgan 3 times though). He did stop a slightly faded Curtis Cokes twice and he decisioned a slightly past prime Emile Griffith. He was stopped in the 4th by Billy Backus (cuts caused by punches)... yes, he stopped Backus in their rematch. He went on to beat Hedgemon Lewis twice and a few others. He was also stopped two more times. Napoles was great but in my opinion it's clear that Leonard was better. You don't see names like Benitez, Duran, Hearns, and Hagler on Napoles resume. Sure... Cokes, Griffith, and Monzon are but they don't quit compare in my opinion and Monzon beat the shlt out of Napoles (no shame), while Leonard did get the win over Hagler.
