He was one of the best and he when he first came on the scene everyone was a fan. But when he waited till Hagler was washed up to fight him that created alot of animosity. I respect the way he fought but not the person he was. I wish he was on the Contender instead of Tony Danza though.

Thanks for the many good replies.

As for the LaLonde bussines, that was embarassing, but a good win nonetheless. But you can find embarassing things in most fighters careers (perhaps not Louis's, though), but when it comes to Leonard every little question mark seems to be made into a glaring exclamation point and that is fascinating in a way.

Something with him just rubs people in the wrong way, and since I have no personal feeling for him myself (just respect for him as a fighter) that is one thing that has surprised me on this board.

its difficult to say why he is disliked.till i came on this site i wasn't aware that it almost a universal thought.stealing the title from hagler didn't help and cherry picking his titles too.what about his lucky draw with tommy hearns ?
him being an ATG isn't in question but there's something about him that gets up your nose

another question is how much stock do you want to give him for gaining a decision over a man he deliberately watched five years to see digress physically? How much stock do you give for avenging a loss to a 29 year old that shed 40 pounds? The Benitez fight is an okay accomplishment but I do recall Curry and Weston getting the better of him on their aggression. The Hearns fight has to count for something I can't help thinking this is alot like the first Schmeling Louis fight.

I think the Norris fight puts him into proper perspective. Granted, Norris WAS great and had too much going for him athletic and talent wise for someone like leonard but still...THIS WAS SUGAR RAY!!

Elaborate BF1 if you can. Normally when a fighter's had his last fight, they are washed up-and it showed with Hagler.

You wanted the truth didnt you? You asked for it and you discount it because you don't LIKE it?? I get the feeling you already knew the answer being that it's so commonly known. This is why I said this thread is bogus from the beginning

Mainly the top line & partly the bottom line more than likely.

A lot of people claim they didnt like what SRL did to Hagler... by inviting him to that big get together only to announce his retirement rather than a fight between he & Hagler then yrs later come back when Hagler looked a bit slower.....

My question to those guys is.... truthfully, honestly, would you still hold that against Leonard had Hagler won ?..... No is the answer your looking for.

Ps. I like Leonard, he was 1 of the best ever boxers, very complete with 1 of the best records (in quality, not quantity) in history.

I didn't like Hagler back in the 80's. I tired of the woe is me, no repsect bull****. But now, 25 years after the fact he's one of my favorite fighters to watch. I can just watch and enjoy.
Likewise, there's a lot to like about Leonard if you just watch all the fights and forget all the hype.

This kind of talk is being pushed out there by the leonard groupies to disguise the true reasons which I and others have already gone into. Nobody's falling for the line about "quality not quanity" either. Quality being 36-3-1? He could have pushed for more fights. Instead he pushed hard for less fights because well truthfully, he couldnt handle it :yep

36-3-1 by any stretch of imagination, amounts to IMO, mediocrity. And quality wise there's no Pryor, Jackson, McCallum, or Nunn which he could have if taken he had more guts. No one demanded rematches with Hearns and Duran. There was nothing left of them at that point. There's also Norris but I wouldnt call it a success.
