Manny's gonna be real disappointed when he learns that fact.

    Too bad.

You two might have got along.

(Then again, maybe not. Manny might not be very understanding of your gay problem. He's redneck.)

But he's real proud of that trailer and if he hears you badmouthin' his dwellin' place, not only will you not get along, he might just track you down and lay a lickin' on you.

Then again, he rarely stays sober long enough to leave Ohio.

Maybe he'll put Leeroy on your sorry ass !

    Get mediaeval and such.:yep

Ray is a manipulator, and a bit of a jerk, which became much more evident when he started making his precious comebacks.

Wife beater, drug addict, alcoholic. I don't aspire to be either of them however I feel I'm at least going down the route of one in my life :-(

Plenty to like about Leonard, but also plenty to dislike.

I didn't like him as a kid because he beat Hearns and Hagler and they were both my favorites growing up.

I think his persona seemed a little phoney too compared to the others.

As I have got older I have warmed to him, I think he as a personality has mellowed with age as well, he doesn't seem quite as irritating as he once was.

after seeing the depth of insight offered in thin's bump of this years old thread, i really don't see how it's possible to continue posting in classic without coming across as a shameless fraud.

I think his 2nd fight with Duran was as satifying a statement as Barrera-Hamed...both fights i enjoy watching immensely.

For me it is wierd and kinda hard to explain....I loved leonard as a kid and he was definately one of my favorites. Then when the PPv era came into play I drifted away from boxing, and din't return untill Nelson vs Fenech I (Love nelson but Fenech was robbed) on I believe the Tyson/Ruddock undercard???

Anyway as an adult his flash just didn't wow me as it used to, not implying in any shape or form that he was not tremendously skilled to go with the flash and showmanship. Like many Hagler/Hearns and semi-Duran fans I don't like the fact that he won some of those fights, the way he won them etc.

I don't like that Hearns had to wait so long to get a 2nd shot, or the way he was jobbed in that decision (I understand that he was not scoring the cards). Not sure about Benitez, although I wonder how it would have played out at 154 (But in head and heart still think SRL would take the fight). Not happy with Hagler negotiations, flurry stealing rounds (although certainly a brilliant strategy that paid off big time), nor the decision...which I agree was not a robbery and SRL did not score the fight either..I had hagler by 1 so can't cry robbery...but that 118-110 card is crazy!

I certainly don't hate him along the lines of rooster, nor do I hate him at all...But, I do not like him and think he gets a free pass on bad decisions, bad negotiating tactics, and selecting hand picked/timed opponents (One the guys like Hopkins/PBF/DLH do not recieve).

having said that I certainly recognize his greatness, and rank him top 20 atg, not because people will ask me why, but he deserves it...On his best night at 148, he would be tough for anyone to handle on their equally best night.

Leonard is in my book one of the top five pound for pound.

He won against Hagler with a smart strategy, he outsmarted Hagler and that is boxing, you fight with your brain.

I loved what he did against Duran in the second fight, pure class, again used his strategy to not just win the fight but disturb Duran mentaly so he had to quit, briliant!

He brought out the fighter and warrior in him self in the first Hearns fight and acted as a champion and won, respect!

He fought them all and beat them all, that is not what we can say about todays so called champions who don“t dare to go up in the ring against good oponents.

Respect to Sugar Ray Leonard, anything else is stupid.
    That is MY opinion.

People are crazy to dislike SRL for managing his own career so well.
The guy took the right fights at the right time, and made everyone involved a lot of money, and usually came out the winner. For that he should be admired. It's a business.

But I do think SRL is seriously overrated by many here, on their ATG p4p lists.

At the end of the day, the great fighters of his era - Hagler, Hearns, Duran (Include Benitez if you want) great, great fighters and superstars in their own right - danced to Leonard's tune.

They were the puppets and he the puppetmaster.

Must admit i was really surprised when i first came on here to see the hatred towards him. Personally i judge him on his fights and not any other aspect of his life otherwise where do we stop? Hating on Robinson for wifebeating? Ali for banging women left and right? Louis for taking drugs? Sonny for his 'connections'?

Fact is, a large percentage of fighters have a side to them thats not 'nice' but what are ya gonna do?

I think hes a great fighter and should be judged as such and nothing else

IMO, SRL is a real mixed bag. On one hand he fought greats in their prime (Benitez, Hearns & Duran) so deserved all the plaudits for that, on the other hand as he got older I found the stipulations in his matcmaking (i.e. Lalonde @ 168 for the LHW title) as cynical and against the tradition of the sport. Acts such as this tarnished his greatness for me, but he could get away with it because he was the biggest paycheque for the likes of Lalonde. Can you imagine SRR insisting that Maxim come in at 168? Not likely...

Also, when I hear SRL interviewed these days, he often comes across as sly, he seems to make subtle, surruptitious digs about his former opponents, to make himself look better, but cleverly dresses them up in the middle of an apparent compliment...there is a cynicism about SRL that I find hard to stomach.

It is very strange, in some ways SRL comes across as very intelligent, articulate and urbane, but I can't help but see the slyness & cynicism that appears to lurk between the surface.
