He rarely got tested, and when he did with Wilder and Ruiz, he lost, so some people are deluded creating the version of him that never existed, believing in the hype of the manufactured boogeyman of the 10's.
Because he's a big, hard hitting Cuban southpaw who we never saw in his prime, allowing us to extrapolate backwards his abilities shown in old age. Could have been is always better than actually was.
Personally never rated him very highly. Matter of fact I dont particularly care for Cuban fighters in general...BORING
It’s not because he was an exceptional fighter. He wasn’t. But he had some key attributes that would have made him a problem for some people in head to head fights. He had incredible punching power. A fairly sturdy chin. The south paw stance. Fast hands for a man his age. And is 6’4” and 245-250 lbs on a given night. As much as I love Gerry Cooney ( and might even rank him higher than Ortiz ) I firmly believe that Ortiz would have flattened him . Has nothing to do with talent or legacy. Just very BAD chemistry…
