Boxing's most beloved counter puncher: Juan Manuel Marquez seems immune to any criticism. He's likeable (except for drinking urine), modest enough, a GREAT technician and counter puncher, and people tend to feel bad that he was robbed against Pac (how ever many times you think is up to you). On top of being well liked, Marquez is ranked in the top 5 pound-for-pound of many boxing critics. When a fellow top 5 pound for pound fighter takes a fight against a less than stellar opponent, there is a HUGE backlash. Accusations of ducking, steroids, you name it, are thrown out. Yet in less than a month, Marquez himself is fighting an opponent who simply does not belong in the ring with a top 5 pound for pound fighter; Al Sabaupan. Ever heard the name? He is the kind of fighter you would expect to see an old Erik Morales take out, not a top 5 pound for pound fighter. If this were a retirement fight, I completely get it. Let Marquez knock a bum out in front of his home Mexican crowd and ride off in to the sunset. He deserves it without question for all the memorable fights he has left us. But I don't think he has any intention of retiring. Marquez seems content to continue to fight sub par opposition in a division absolutely TEEMING with talented fighters who would LOVE to fight Marquez. 140 lbs is a hot division right now, and it pains me to see such a capable fighter who is so highly regarded do little other than continue to say..."Pacquiao".
I somewhat agree, I mean he is rated up there with Pacquaio and Floyd who are criticised for fighting the fighters they have recently. He is willing to fight Pacquaio but in between that fight he should be trying to beat other top fighters.
Imagine being in the top 5 for a long long time, then beating the best in the world (supposedly) only to get robbed. I would feel quite pissed off. Kinda like when Hagler retired after SRL I imagine that there is only one guy he wants to take serious and fight, and thats Pacquiao. All these bums for JMM are tune-ups for much bigger fights. JMM wants no part of the top 135/140/147 because pac is his only true target. Thats my opinion and I could be wrong though
You are exactly correct. He is totally fixated on Pacquiao. It's absolutely understandable, but at the same time, can you still rank him THAT high when he has no intention of taking on real challenges and just wants a fourth fight with the same guy? We have had three great fights, yet I really don't want to see a fourth.
Agreed. I am completely over the Marquez/Pacquiao trilogy and would like Marquez to make one last run at a title at 140. Would be big for his legacy if he can get Khan or Bradley before he is done.
You have a point. Marquez should be fighting some of the top 140 guys, there's some good match-ups to be made. My guess is he doesnt wanna risk losing and screwing up another potential PAcquiao rematch.
He's beaten other quality fighters besides Pacman like Siri Salido, Casamayor, Barrera, Medina, Katsidis, and robbed vs Norwood, John, and Pacquiao obviously, but like he said he just wants his hand raised vs Pacquiao. This is a guy who should of been retired he's already had a great career he's nothing left to prove those fights he has inbetween those are just stay active fights besides fighting the p4p king Pacman sure there are others, but Jmm wants the best. Khan, Alexander, Mathysse, Rios, etc would be interesting, but I'd favor him in all of them tho Khan with his speed would present problems early, but I think Juan breaks him down late in a classic.
Can you blame him? He beat the guy three times and got robbed each time. I would be chasing him down to until he got objective judges. I think with all the controversy in the last fight he will get a fair shake if they fight again.
I'm with you. There are probably seven or eight fights at 140 with Marquez that I could get absolutely PUMPED for. Hell, even a fight with Judah would be very exciting and have a lot of hype. It's sad he seems to have zero interest in such fights though.
I think all the guy really wants at this point is a official win over Pac. The difference between him from Pac and Mayweather is he has already fought them both. He could make a run at 140, but I feel like at this point he think he has nothing else to prove.
You're right about that but his fights in-between should still be against top fighters. Obviously this only started after the 3rd fight an likely doesn't want to risk anything happening before the 4th fight, but there is still many good matches that could be made for Marquez at 140-147 lbs.
Because he gets sympathy points for "getting robbed" plus he already lost to Floyd Mayweather, is no longer a threat to the hero. This site is dominated by Mayweather and Klitschko fans and anyone that stands in their way is hated with a passion. If David Haye ever got robbed it would just be ammunition for some fans to use by throwing it in their rival forum members faces. "Deal with it." "SD12." "He deserved it." If Haye ever took a humbling ass whooping by Vitali and was respectful after the bout, gave praise, it would wipe the slate clean. Same scenario with Pacquiao if he fought and lossed to Mayweather.
Because his recovery time is inhuman as his depserate search for EPO ended with a convicted Steroid distributor named Memo who is a chemist in a drug ridden country and cook up whatever sauce is needed. The humongous ever expanding forehead speaks for itself.
