Pretend he's retired, as he might as well be in any other version of reality.

Then think to yourself, "oh look at that, Marquez hasn't retired at all. In fact, he's taking a stay-busy fight as he targets the big pay days at 39 years old instead of walking away and robbing us of seeing him work his brilliance in the ring ever again."

Then give your thanks and be grateful.

Even Mayweather goes easy on the guy. He and Hagler seem to be the most immune from haters. Cotto is also pretty well regarded.

Marquez is immune because nobody has ever claimed that he's #1.

You have completely missed the point.

Out of all the ranked p4p fighters he is fighting the WORST opposition. I don't think he should be ranked so high if he's just going to knock down a couple bums a year waiting for a FOURTH Pacquiao fight that no one really wants to see.

Personally im a big JMM fan, hes intelligent and well schooled in the sweet science in and out of the ring however his latest choice of opposition is lacking

Fedchenko was a solid Euro fighter and Morales is more of a scalp that he feels the need to grab however I think he would have benefited more from fighting Matthysse / Maidana.

However so long as he fights Khan/Pacquiao/Bradley next it should regain some of his credibility as a top pound for pound fighter

^I'm really doubting he will fight anyone but Pacquiao...

And if he does I think he will lose. He turns 39 very soon.

    I'll play Devil's advocate here:

Never heard of Al Sabaupan, but he has a pretty good record. (19 -1 with 14 KO's) Even if against bums, that 'aint hay. (Nor is it Haye, but that's a joke for another thread ...)

Also, suppose there some part of JMM's defense, or even offense, that they want to fine-tune? Perhaps Sabaupan has a particular strength that would make him an excellent "real world sparring partner" for JMM, the best fighter to practise new techniques on.

This is completely plausible, and I'm willing to give the great JMM plenty of reasonable doubt here.

Your not looking at the big picture he just finished embarrassing Pacquiao the supposed #1 p4p and he's at the end of the road. He's not obligated to face anyone else. Pacman tho is because of the controversies surrounding their fights. Didn't just make Pacman look bad, but most thought Jmm won.

I think you are being hard on JMM. He's already fought the two best fighters of the decade, three weight classes above his natural weight class and PBF cheated him on the scales. He was a unified champ at FW and should have been Ring champ after beating Pac. He beat MAB at 130 and should have been ring champ but was again robbed by Pac. Moves up to LW and becomes Ring champ and then defends his belt against solid contenders in Katsidis and Diaz. Moves up to WW and beats the p4p #1 at the age of 38. Now he's taking a fighter with a good record but someone I know little about. He has done just fine IMO.

Marquez is one of those guys who are impossible to hate. He might not be facing the best opposition these days, but he already cemented a great legacy years ago and is now riding off into the sunset. He also beat the so-called FOTDGOATP4P#1 less than 8 months ago.
