That above statement is the most hypocritical you can make, one minute you say Marquez is technically better than Mayweather.

Then you acknowledge that his resume isnt as established as it could be , implying that this amazing technique isnt successful against good operators.

    DOH

overall, alot of fighters are technically better than mayweather, cotto being one of them.....what helps mayweather out are his natural talents like speed.....but technically alot of fighters throw, move, and cover up better than him.....it's just that money may is really good at what he does...

How is Cotto technically better than Mayweather?

What does he do fundamentally better than Mayweather?

I don't understand nor do I agree with that statement.

This is only a part of the story.

I think that Pretty Boy actually does have decent fundamentals. He just doesn't employ them that much. Technically, in the final round agaisnt Corrales, he is terrible.

But I do agree that Floyd is overated technically by the board in general.

Chin tucked in, doesn't lead with the left hook, hands in the correct position, technically proper footwork, doesn't retreat in a straight line, doesn't fail to cover his walk aways with a shot...the list goes on and on.

What did he do wrong in the final round against Corrales?

    How is he overrated technically?

Please explain fellas ... I never heard or see that before but if you explain, I just might be able to understand.

go to any boxing gym in the world, and cotto or marquez is pretty much WHAT THEY TEACH....

they dont teach to forearm to the face...

or drop your hands down low.....

    or shoulder roll.....

or to back up to the rope and counterpunch....etc etc

are you catching my drift here.....

floyd is a monster when it comes down to speed and accuracy, but alot of it is natural born talent, that's why i dont give creds to roger or floyd sr as elite trainers, if anything they've taken alot of goods away from some fighters trying to turn them into floyd, but they dont understand that floyd has a gift.....

    One quick example.

In the last round Mayweather is attacking and Corrales mounts a desperate rally. Impressive stuff actally. Mayweather retreats in a straight line, using pure reaction time to get out of the way. "The train always makes the station" is how it was best explained to me - an attacker able to persue a fleeing opponent in a straight line will ALWAYS get his man. It's true here also. Mayweather gets clipped.

The correct technical action would have been to take a step to the left and make an angle for a punch - you can see how much better that is?

Look at Mayweather's hands. They are often very low. Because he is quick enough defensively he gets away with prioritising his offence. Technically incorrect.

all elite fighters have their chin tucked to a certain degree ... Floyd tucks his chin under his left shoulder ...

footwork is very proper ... good stance ... good balance ....

this guy pivots at the drop of a dime and its a good weapon to have. He may retreat in a straight line, but then all of a sudden he pivots to switch angles.

Cotto retreats in a straight line as well ... you have to talk about someone good on their toes to talk about someone who doesn't retreat in a straight line.

What fight(s) are you talking about?

    OK good points.

Would you say on a consistant basis or just depends on opponent?

    He is consistantly bad technically.

But he IS capable of doing things properly. Put it this way - I think he has the fundamentals and in the ulikely event that he boxes into his late thirties, I don't expect a sudden Jones-like failure. Jones failed because of bad technique, primarily, in my view. Ironically he is now a better technical fighter than he was in his prime!

Mayweather won't have this problem, in my opinion becase he will prove technically capable in later life.

thats taticle ... he holds his hands down to counter ... he uses his fast twitch muscles and gets low enough to go over the top. IMO that give him the advantage over stiff fighters - like Cotto

good **** McGrain ... you made good points and no need for an argument because you put it so that there was nothing to counter. Facts are facts but at the same time i'll have to look at some past Mayweather fights and see more clear.

I see his defense carrying through the late stages of his career. He's able to keep his hands up, use his jab, and pivot.

You're right he doesn't do those things on a consistant basis, but depending on his opponent - you may see him adjust.

I've seen all these fights and Marquez is A level no doubt, a bit past his prime but I give him 60% chance at beating PAcqiaio.
