Matthysse doesn't want to lose his position with the wbc and get ****ed out of a title shot, even if he loses hel still hold his interim title and still has a shout for getting a title shot somewhere along the lines. I'd imagine he doesn't have much faith in the wbc he's been denied a shot for long enough. I mean Ajose Olusegun was wbc mandatory for three years wtf
The smartest move Matthyse made was to sign with Uncle Al Haymon. I never felt Golden Boy were keen for Matthyse or Ajose to fight Danny Garcia. I may be wrong of course but I doubt Garia and Matthyse will fight but don't be surprised if one of them faces Mayweather instead the other faces Amir Khan.
No matter how weird it looks, I think Matthysse made the right move here. Chances are if Peterson makes it to the end Lucas gets a fair shake now because Peterson gets to keep his belt anyway. And with all crap politics around, he still wil be the #1 to fight Garcia. Cause I'm pretty sure there won't be a fight if he destroys Peterson and becomes IBF champ.
Surely Matthysse can't be denied if he beats Peterson, they'll have no choice but to make the fight with Garcia. I think your right though about Mayweather,I can see Garcia being touted as an opponent and wouldn't be suprised if that fight happened. Garcia will have to vacate his title though leaving probably Matthysse and Khan to duke it out. What do you reckon?
Of course Matthysse isn't gonna' complain. He's just doing what he's told. Being with Al Haymon doesn't automatically mean he'll be guaranteed title shots, either. And I'm not blaming Peterson. I'm blaming whoever's made this stupid decision to have it at 141. The excuse of it benefitting Matthysse makes no sense at all (as I've already explained). I just think it's lame how guys like Khan, Peterson, etc, benefit from easy paths to title shots, whilst Matthysse does it the hard way and still has to get in line.
Smart in the sense that he'll now be better compensated for the second-best fights he'll be limited to. But considering Al Haymon's reputation of reluctantly matching his fighters with one another, there might actually be less chance of him being allowed to face the likes of Garcia and Broner. I'm hoping this tournament that's in place will prevent that from happening, though (should Matthysse beat Peterson). But nothing's for certain. From Garcia's opinion, there's nothing obliging him to face Matthysse should he win. Whenever asked about him, he always says it's up to Al Haymon and GBP.
Jonesy (USA Rob) can be a bellend at times, but in here and the Mayweather/Canelo 147 thread he seems to be the only one talking sense. Everybody has jumped on Peterson and his team when Oscar (I know that he’s a ****** and shouldn’t be taken seriously) actually said that it was Matthysse who asked for it. Think about it… Peterson wins and then you’ve got Peterson Vs Garcia. Matthysse still has his interim belt so gets Garcia early next year while Peterson win/lose/draw against Garcia still has a money spinning rematch with Khan at 147. GBP are just trying to make it so they have as many possible big fights to come from it regardless of the outcome.
The 141 non title catch weight was Matthysse's idea. He feels that he's been dodged so much that if he picks up the ibf strap he'll lose his wbc mandatory and Garcia will continue to duck him. I think its a stupid idea as maintaining mandatory spot doesn't guarantee Garcia will fight him, he can easily vacate and move up in weight anyway. He should be taking PEDerson's strap and then unifying with Garcia
I like how Matthysse's interim title is "meaningless", yet Peterson's IBF belt is apparently legit. They're both not proper world titles. I'm sure some of you guys will believe anything you're told. Either way it's a cracking fight. One of the best of the year so far IMO. So enjoy it!
Garcia will have moved up by then (probably to face Mayweather), and Matthysse will be left with a lesser opponent to fight for the WBC title.
You're putting an interim title and the IBF (which is a world title) on the same platform? The benefits that come with holding a world title -- be it the WBA, IBF, WBO or WBC -- far outweight the benefits of holding an interim one. The former opens the door for recognition and better paydays. Having multiple titles in weightclasses is a shitty thing, yes, but that there is the one good it brings - the prestige of being a world champion. But yeah, it is a good fight. Better it happen at 141 than not at all.
I know what you are saying and if things were logical that would be the case but as you know the WBC and logic don't necessarily go together. If it did Matthyse would be the WBC Champion instead of interim Champion as the fight between him and Ajose Olusegun should have been for the full WBC title. Garcia remains tenable whilst Uncle Al Haymon keeps him undefeated.
While i would have preferred the IBF to be on the line in this fight so that Lucas could win a "proper" Althabet title, i'm just happy that this fight is happening as its got action and entertainment guaranteed.
