Lets take 1996 olympic medalists, and lets see how many of you know them

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boxing_at_the_1996_Summer_Olympics

Some of them were successfull, but you dont ****ing know more than half of them. The big majority of them didnt do **** in the pros. And the same happens with every single medalist.

But I dont ****ing know why are we having this discussion, a discussion that is obvious to anyone that knows **** about this sport.

Amateur simply means you don't get paid. You develop your skills by competing in live competition, striving for medals in tournaments week after week month after month. Accassionally you get a olympic gold medalists that don't do that well in the pro's like Andrew Maynard, and the tall English guy, i forgot his name. As a general those with good amateur backgrounds do very well. Just an example, Mike Tyson was an Olympic Alternate as was Zab Judah.

Then you have those that accomplished alot but didn't go to the olympics, Froch, Hatton,Bradley,Malinaggi, Calzage, Hagler, Trinidad. Most of these guys strived to be great in the amateurs without thinking about going pro, then upon developing this rediculiously high level of skills decided to go pro.

Yes, whenever we have no solid points, the other person is a troll. Common sentiment on your person. I do not speak to banned people though-------FUMIN.

I don't think this goes against anything I say. It is correlation more than causation though perhaps.

Why we must have the discussion is that you look around you and you see all of this people who do NOT understand these kind of things, Jackal.

My age is irrelevant to what is Germane to this discussion. It is irrelevant to any of the Jackson family.

In my country we call this slanderous libel. It is illegal.

The top olympians are the best pure boxers out there. Throw the pros in the ring with them in the same format (3 three minute rounds) and the Cuban amateurs could very likely win.

I personally think that if you rise to the top of any of your chose sport whether it be so called “amateur” or “professional” you should be given credit that accomplishment is due. Because rising to that elite level in any chosen sport in an unbelievable achievement where you have sacrificed hours of your time, hours of your coaches time to achieve this feat, and I don’t think that should ever be looked down upon and I don’t think it is if I am honest.

The list of all time greats who have gained Olympic or world medals in boxing is unbelievable. A lot have been listed above, but also there are fighters who never made it in the pro game but have gained Olympic or world medals also deserve the respect for accomplishing something that hardly anyone else ever will. I mean look at Teofilo Stevenson and Felix Sevon did fight proffesionally but deserve respect for dominating their eras in the amateur game.

Additionally the olympics come around once ever 4 years with one chance for most typically, to get to get that elusive medal typically, while some of the alphabet titles in the professional games meaning you could be fight for a world title 6 times or more in that period of time. I would much prefer in my trophy cabinet an Olympic medal, than some of that titles out there now.

Amateur boxing is clearly important to the development of a fighter. And to be a winner or to be respectable in the highest level of amateur boxing is something that should always be noted. Being good at that level gives you an edge over those who did not have any experience there or were not so good in the amateur ranks. It doesnt mean that one was an olympian or a medalist means that they will be good boxers, but it is also ludicrous to dicount the fact that so many champs from multiple eras who were medalists or just olymians were also very successful. So to summarize, it is not a deciding factor but it is worth noting.
