major main stream recognition and also the face of his own promotion company.
he pushes what the media says about him, a finely crafted media image.
he's one of the last men in the sport today to have been in, and won a medal, at the Olympics when people still cared about it.

there's also something to be said about how he conducts himself, if he wants a fight with somebody he goes out and gets it done, if people are calling him out (and everyone is) he picked the biggest name and gets it done. he smiles, he shakes hands, he gets the word out and doesn't bicker.
while guys like Margarito complain about unfair purses, the Pavlik's chase ghosts(ironic isn't it) and guys like Williams are ducked by anyone with a pulse.
Soon as these guys take fate into their own hands instead of letting it toss them around like a leaf in a storm they can become boxing's Icons.

In my opinion Boxing's audience gets smaller and smaller in America due to PPV. Most Americans don't care and would never pay the money to watch anyone. Those that do pay the money started watching boxing in the nineties or before when Hoya was on top. It's not that Hoya is the superstar when he shouldn't be. It's that Hoya is the last superstar.

    Yeah as above.

He was a popular figure in his prime and his name will still interest those casual fans that watched his fights back then.

Same reason why a Lewis or Tyson fight would still get a lot of viewers.

He is a good looking guy, and his personality resonates with mainstream America. People who don't watch boxing regularly will still watch a fight that he is involved in.

I mean , the best doesn't always get all the recognition... just look at music today,

Do you really think Brittany ****ing spears or Hannah Montana are actually the best musicians out there just because they pull in the most $$$?

The sad thing is the next fighter to become as big as Hoya will probably emerge in the MMA. That's what the youth are buying today. I'm strictly speaking of USA sales of course, not in the rest of the world where boxing is still a megaforce. But USA sales are a huge chunk of the worldwide cash cake.

I would say he was the better fighter in that fight, not all around. I think Hoya with Mayweather Sr. in corner had a very good chance of winning.

Hoya looked like a robot under Roach
Hopkins looked like an old man under Roach.

He really has, he was not given an easy schedule of opponents in his prospect run.
