Why is Pavlik a more popular fighter in the U.S, then say....Chad Dawson?

I don't think there's room for the race card in 2009. Think Obama. This "great white American hope" theory is anachronistic bull****. People don't give a **** about skin color in sports anymore.

But I'm curious, why did you play the race card? Do you really feel that Kelly being white has anything to do with his popularity?

Pavlik HAS fought better without being KTFO. Shorty ain't got the style or the reach to accomplish this.

I hope you read my ealier post. I don't think identification and appeal is the same as the race card.

Maybe because Kelly doesn't wear earrings the size of grapefruits.

With out looking it up, I'm 99% sure he's from Connecticut. Like you say "shout out" to the area, I can't hardly think of any other fighter, of any time, that gets his hometown mentioned as much as Pav. You hear Youngstown almost as much as you hear Pavlik's name.

If you go to Jack Loew's site you will find this logo/link. It may be a mindset here. I would love for us to have another like Pavlik so we could test the race theory "scientifically" though. :D

I'm white and I've come across plenty of white people supporting a fighter they see as an image of themselves, ie white. I remember my ex boss (whos about 43) saying 'we need a great white hope'. Plenty of ESB posters have a top5 favourate fighters list that are all white, coincidence?

Race isnt the factor it was but its still a factor.

Human nature IS human nature. But race is starting to dissolve as an important difference. It will take more time to be sure. I prefer Taylor over Froch in EVERY respect I can think of at the moment. :deal

Top 5 list all white, really??? I can't think of seeing one, and if it did, it would prolly have to be a European poster, who likes 160- HW's, and Ricky..lol.

This thread didnt make much sense. It was like he wanted an answer of 'cos pavliks white' when the statements he makes have no basis

    So is Dawson

Pavlik is about to fight his second mando. His first mando against Lockett was a ratings disaster. His mando against Rubio was rejected by HBO and now he's fighting on an independant PPV. Him fighting mandos has actually hurt his career.

He was contractually obligated to give Taylor a rematch just like Dawson is contractually obligated to give Tarver a rematch. Also many thought Pavlik was clearly winning the 1st Taylor fight before he knocked Taylor out. Most assumed that Pavlik would win the rematch easily.

    So does Dawson

    This is definately an advantage

    Not really

    So is Dawson

I doubt this is helping him much. From my perespective, Pavlik is more popular because he defeated a popular fighter on HBO and he's, for the most part, been well promoted by Arum. In the next few years, I see Dawson shooting ahead of Pavlik in terms of popularity.
