Why is Pavlik not a big draw?

He has all the atributes to make him very popular domestically. He is the undisputed middle weight champion. He has beaten Taylor twice, once knocking him out. He knocked out some dangerous hard hitters too. He always fights the best and looks to fight the best. He's young and unbeaten and he hits hard. You just can't fault this guy on a personal level either. So why is he not a big draw? Why is Jones, for example, a bigger draw than Pavlik? (Calzaghe would make more money fighting Jones than Pavlik)

The issue is that all though every Boxing fan knows exactly who Kelly Pavlik is ;Your average sports fan does not .It has much to do with the profile boxing has with the public .30 or 20 years ago you dident need to be a big boxing fan to know who the main contenders and campions were in the divisions .Not any more . Pay per view and cable has meant that many fighters are never even seen by the public on there tvs and there fore it takes longer for their presence to enter in to the public consciousness (Athough i think this is now changing ).In the UK Hatton and Calzaghe (who took years even when champion to get noticed) and Amir khan are the exceptions )In this day of age there for selling a fight to the public needs different elements and public profile and exposure is one of them .In the UK at least RJJ beats KP in this respect with respect to recognition with Joe public . Thats what sells ppv and if the fight is staged in the uk a huge attendence .Which is a huge shame .Ask most boxing fans what contest they would prefer it would be kp. Yet the reality is what we are going to get is RJJ

The low ratings had very little to do with race. Calzaghe and Kessler aren't American. No one in the States knows who those guys are. Pavlik was like a 25/1 favorite over Lockett. Mismatches will often lead to low ratings. The overwhelming popularity of MMA suggests that America has no problem with white fighters. They just need to be promoted properly. As Pavlik gets older and is involved in more high fights, his popularity will increase.

He does not have the biggest personality in the world. For me he is quite dull, and this directly affects your popularity amongst Joe Neutral, like it or not.

Exactly! The American boxing public is slow to accept fighters who aren't American.

Yeah, it looks a little like MMA has mostly a white audience and Boxing in the US has mostly a Latino and secondly black audience.

Even white american boxing fans seem to have a positive bias towards black fighters (for example the two white boxing4real hillbillies on youtube). Why this is, I do not know.

No we aren't, we'd just naturally rather see a sport we've always dominated stay that way.

I am American, 23 years of age... Always have loved boxing and love Pavlik, he has led me get into boxing even more. The Problem is that besides one of my best friends who follows boxing, none of them knew of pretty much any of the up and coming fighters unless we told them about them, and my friends are mostly huge sports fans....

In the U.S. with people around my age group .... it generally goes football(american), basketball, then baseball in order of importance.... Just look at ESPN... sure they do show fights but when Pavlik knocked out JT to attain the belts, he got no more than a 15 second highlight on sportscenter. After just a regular season Laker game, they show the highlights and then go into commentary afterwards.... People just don't care anymore, its so sad.

I don't think MMA replaces boxing, I mean a lot of people who are really into MMA that I know seem to follow boxing too.

Roy Jones was more interesting and females considered him good looking.

It all has to do with personality. Mayweather doesn't have a crowd pleasing style, but has got the casual fan interested in him over the past couple of years. Pavlik' "all business/humble" way of doing things isn't going to make him popular

Pavlik's style does not promote longevity. He needs to take advantage of being in his prime at the moment so he can make some money. Vernon Forest realized this too late

Hence his urgency to fight the big JC superstar?

its boxings self destruction that is why he is not popular. am telling you, the lack of mainstream exposure is really going to destroy boxing in the good old USA
