I don't remember any fall from grace like Jones ever ... to go from the p4p best for a decade after huge wins to flattened so terribly so many times its actually disturbing ...
I'd like to add, to everything that has been said, that people tend to have short memories sometimes. We, as in, we the boxing fans in general, remember the knockouts he had towards the end of his career but forget that a still dangerous (for Jones) Felix Trinidad, the hard punching early version of Bernard Hopkins, the hard punching Joe Calzaghe, the hard punching James Toney and others were unable to do much against Jones. The flip side, as someone else already said, is he was so nimble that he was barely ever challenged as a younger fighter and so we never saw him "get tested". I remember when I was 18-21 I thought I had never seen such an impressive combination of power and speed.
Trinidad fought 40 pounds over his natural weight. Toney was so weight drained he did not have any power. Hopkins was not a big hitter anyway. I gotta say this thread is full of excuses. YOU GOT ANY EXCUSES TONIGHT ROY????
Miguel Angel Gonzalez was like 41-0 and then began losing ..he lost 4 of his last 16, drawing 1 after losing for the first time, to Oscar. Oh and Livingstone Bramble was 24-1-1 and then began losing left and right. And center too!
Hopkins was too, early in his career. At this point he was 22-1 with 16 knockouts. Hopkins had power at this point of his career when they first fought.
Says the guy crying Toney was so weight drained he did not have any power when Jones made an absolute fool of him I need some help with your math. Trinidad fought Jones 40 pounds over his natural weight you say. They met at a stipulated 170 pounds. As far as i know 170 minus 40 = 130 pounds, yes? So you are claiming Trinidad's natural weight was 130 pounds, which is junior lightweight. I look forward to hearing how that computes.
I love zaggers as much as the next guy, but this is the first time I've seen "hard punching" and Calzaghe in the same sentence. After Joe bust his hands to bits he really didn't hit that hard anymore. He went most of his career with average power at best.
Calzaghe was right on the Larry Holmes level of power, through. Trust me...Ive heard on Wikipedia how back in the old times, reporters would say some guy had a powerful right hand..then I'd read the boxers record at the end of his/her career, and I;d see he/she won 25 out of 80 bouts by knockout. Compared to those guys/girls? Joe Calzaghe hit like Earnie Shavers when compared lol
I find hard to see a guy being hit with that Tarver punch and being fine.... Roy never saw the punches coming because he was so used to not being hit....
I do not see the connection. Who did Toney stop when being weight drained? You tell me. LOL. Roy was way bigger than Trinidad.
Personally, I don't think Bhop was ever a massive hitter. However he remains the only guy to ever stop Glencoffe Johnson. And that was at 160
Fun fact. He never stopped anyone at 175. If I ever heard anyone claim he was an atg 175 pounder, I would puke.
