Why is the MW division considered weak?

Stop it buffy, MW is an incredibly weak division. WW Cotto who got manhandled by Trout destroyed one of GGG's best wins. Quillin, Jacobs, Lee, and Saunders are now top guys in the sport . Cotto didnt go back to 154 because 160 is such a weak division. He'd lose against Trout again, get schooled by Lara, destroyed by J-rock, schooled by both Charlos, and stopped by Andrade. Instead he picked on one of GGG's best wins, and destroyed him weighing in at 153.
If you consider Canelo a real MW, which he's on record saying he's not fighting at the full 160 for a while then it's not incredibly weak.

 

Kinda agree with the above, though it's worth remembering that the S£xy Sergio
'era' (Mid 2010 - Mid 2013 by my reckoning) had many of the same level guys as highly ranked contenders - Macklin, Murray. Barker, Dzinziruk - as are there now.

As you say, the established names are retired or moved up: Sergio, Sturm, Jr, Pirog maybe, and the only 'passing of the torch' was an unsatisfactory beatdown of a shot Sergio by a JMW, which has left no established names at 160 for aspiring stars to test themselves against or the fans to gauge them against.

And I don't think anyone considers Andy Lee an 'elite' fighter, but he was, of course, also a contender of about the same level as the above, challenging Fatass Jr for the WBC title - a fight he may well have won if he hadn't been outweighed by 20something lbs or so.

Yet a couple of years ago the MW division was "stacked with talent" ... funny how every time a dominant champion arrives the given era suddenly sucks.

 

Sorry if you compare these rankings are isn't much difference between 2014 and let's say 2005, 2008 and 2002

especially during 2008 the division was weaker than today
