One of the major trends in the last few years that I have noticed is that fighters that does not know how to do philly shell defense tries to do pull it off in their mega matches. For example: Jermain Taylor kept his left hand down all night against Kelly Pavlik in a halfassed philly shell stance and took 1-2s all night long until he got KTFO. and.... Julio Diaz who took repeated rights all night against Juan Diaz. Is he trying to look cool or he really thought that he could avoid punishment in a half philly stance with no upper body movement.... Is everyone trying to be like Floyd, bhop, and Toney? I see tons of fighters who fight with their guard down and have zero upper body movements or agile enough to slip....
Taylor is not trying to be like B-Hop, Floyd, or James Toney. It's how he fights. Guys fought with their hands down well before this generation - look at Ken Norton and Thomas Hearns.
Zab Judah and Malignaggi have tried it too. The Philly Shell is great if you can master it. However, you'll get tagged up if yoyu don't know what you're doing
Actually almost everytime I watch pro boxers fight, they would drop their hands but recently I have seen champions who used not too drop their hands do in a half assed philly like stance where their left hand is on their hips.
No he can't. He gets tagged by left hooks all the time, and doesn't effectively counter out the stance like Floyd and Toney.
Paulie does do it pretty decent but he have no standing def like bhop, toney or Floyd. He does got the quickness to bait for counters or jet out of the range but Taylor and Julio did a horrible job. They took so many right hands. I mean did they not study the tapes of Pavlik huge right and Juan's volume combos....? I just don't get it sometimes.
I dont see the problem with it, Floyd aint invent it, neither did toneypretty sure some1 taught that 2 him, floyd sr was doin it b4 pbf. I mean it doesnt matter, if some1 can do it and master it then by all means IMO
