Because they go into the much more lucrative football, baseball, or basketball as well? Sports they can play on a high school team for free and get much more recognition for.

Minorities in the US don't play baseball. Basketball and Football are the number one and two sports in the US for minorities. If they can't make it in those two sports, then they might chose baseball. There are plenty of good black baseball players in the MLB anyways.

Boxing isn't in high schools or in colleges. I don't know if they were back then, but this is a huge reason why some athletes choose Football or Baseball or Basketball than Boxing. If Boxing were in high schools and in colleges just imagine the crowds and the hype these athletes would get for Boxing. It would be way bigger than College Baseball and it would probably get the coverage of College basketball.

back in the old days, you had to fight it out for your survival and your own food. These days, you just go to the unemployment line, pickup a paycheck and foodstamps. Why bother fighting?

Amateur boxing has gone downhill because, as mentioned roughly every other thread people who might have gotten into boxing 30 years ago go into other sports that provide much better opportunities and require much less getting punched in the head.

But by all means, continue to subscribe to the Rocky III theory of social change.

ok, so what is your solution to get our future great athletes to throw their hand into boxing?

    Public school boxing programs?

Lets say there was the funding for it do you think children would just jump at the opportunity immediately to have a chance to fight someone? If so why is a sport like High School wrestling on life support?

In my opinion the root of the problem is availability of the sport to the public. These days you cant see a good fight unless you have showtime or HBO and you cant see a great fight unless you order it on PPV. If boxing was available on network T.V it would be easy for our future athletes to watch and find heroes to inspire them to box. Otherwise boxing is just viewed as fighting and not as a sport to them.

Yes, all of those social welfare services that were introduced with the New Deal are responsible for the decline of American heavyweight boxing in the 90's. That's some keen historical perspective.

You've pulled a neat hat trick by being not only factually wrong, but also condescending and morally repugnant. But I'm sure you're too busy literally fighting other men for your food to respond, so I'll forgive you.

Well first of all...I never said I had the solution. I just gave an OPINION as to why there has been such a decline of quality American Heavyweights.

But for the record...I made an amazing thread that was moved to the EASTSIDE LOUNGE about...There is NBATV, NHLTV, SPEED CHANNEL, NFL NETWORK...YET THERE IS NO ALL BOXING NETWORK.

People stopped watching boxing, which is why it is rarely on TV these days. Putting more of it on TV won't help because people still won't watch it. The solution? Beats me. Boxing in high school would be a step in the right direction though. Wrestling is less popular than other sports at a high school level, but then you can't make a career as a professional wrestler (well, not as an actual athlete), so that likely has something to do with it. More kids boxing at a young age means more local events, means more exposure in the community to boxing, means more people know about the sport and are interested in the sport because they, personally, know someone who fights...that's how you build up interest, I'd think.

But if kids don't want to box they just don't want to. Nothing to be done about that, so maybe it's just not a sport that will draw a lot of American competitors anymore.
