but how many of these youths actually know much of the sport of boxing to really get into it? If we had these same youth programs for say a sport like Rugby or Cricket would it generate enough interest to last the longterm in the community? The sport needs to be exposed to our youth first before we encourage them to try it.

I enjoyed watching baseball as a kid because I played baseball as a kid. I could relate to the game. If I hadn't played it I doubt I would have cared to watch it. For kids, in particular, their interest is visceral. They want to DO things to get a sense of them. I'm by no means saying that I am correct, I'm just of the opinion that without more grass roots level exposure to boxing it will never again generate significant interest in America.

You make a valid point, admittingly I was the same with Soccer as a kid and never watched it. Gave up on it when no one else was interested in playing it, it was either softball or basketball. The grassroots idea seemed like it would of been a great idea especially if it had happened in the 80s when guys like Tyson and SRL were at the peak of their popularity. Its really just hard to imagine it with any kind of success in today's interests. Im still more inclined to believe that the lack of quality american heavyweights (and in other divisions as well) is due to the lack of interest for the sport and not economics.

I simply think this is overinterpreting.

People gravitate to the sports most natural to them. If they had the opportunity to box, more big Americans attrated to boxig would.

A lot of atheletes are just not ball sport guys. Why do you think ultimate fighitng is growing so rapidly amongst all demographics? They have no lack of gugh competeing. It is a combat sport to which anyone can bring their high school wrestling skills, or whatever.

Some are natural warriors. Never mind supporting a family, millions pay to learn ju jitsu, Karate, etc. Millions compete in high school wreslting. And if the opportunity was there, millions more would compete in boxing.

You are also putting the cart before the horse in another way- if there was high school boxing, then college level boding would develpe and there would be scholorships.

This kind of attitude is really annoying and is just blatant racism. Your saying because White Europeans are dominating it's because black americans don't wanna play anymore, not because whites are not better. I bet you were revelling in black superiority in the 80's & 90's.

If you must know...I figured since this is a Boxing Site...Only people would know the "More Popular" players.

Sure I could have said players like Roy Williams, Calvin Johnson, Kellen Winslow Jr., Anquan Boldan, David West, Micheal Beasley, Andre Johnson, Al Jefferson, James Harden, Nick Young, OchoCinco (Chad Johnson)..and more.

    HAPPY?????

I never mentioned anything about White Europeans. I am simply giving an OPINION about a demographic that I know about.

This is not a thread to show a blatant disrespect to another demographic and/or culture.

Now if you see or take it that way...Then obviously there is a problem with your PERCEPTION.

And I can't do anything about HOW YOU INTERPRET OR PERCEIVE a Thread/Opinion.

Generally, all American athletes are being channeled into 3 sports. US boxing has been obviously reduced by this multi-generational change. The very BEST American athletes are absolutely and undeniably not in the ring.

I don't think there is any suggestion about the status of "white Europeans" being better or worse as that comparative is a discussion of the present versus the past. The "classic" forum has many such arguments regarding the talent level of fighters from different eras. Surely an adequate argument can be made that modern "white European" boxers from this era are the beneficiaries of a myriad of advancements in nutrition, sport medicine, conditioning methods, etc., etc. and calling them "better" is quite correct. And, of course, this same argument works for ALL current era boxers regardless of color.

There was a post I responded to (on the "classic" forum addressing a mythical fight) that included Vitali Klitschko and that post was attempting to rationalize (wrongly IMO) his lack of US popularity in the context of racial bias. It went like this:

My response follows .. hopefully you take what fits this thread's discussion out of the (unrelated) post to understand one take on a subject in which Klitschko is the subject but it may well fit into your "white European" commentary and offer clarity on where the thread starter's observations coincide with another point of view of the heavyweight division's condition but perhaps not your own - and one where it is not an issue of color but of the total dominance of 3 other sports:
