In The Small Community That We Do Have...

It Seems Like Technical Boxing (defense, Smart Fighting, Avoiding Brawls..etc) is viewed in a negative light... to me it is a shame that even with in our own group of boxing fans.... hard core boxing fans still seem to hate on boxers who out think their opponents

I don't agree with your hypothesis. Some don't like that style but many do.
Maybe we could come up with a list of Technical boxers and figure who and what we like and don't like about that style. Technical boxer come in a wide variety of flavors. Mayweather, Vitili, and Malignaggi would probably be considered Technical boxers and all three are completely different fighters.
While I enjoyed watching mayweather and Vitili, i hate watching malignaggi.

Are you crazy? The "hardcore fans" love and enthuse over that style...it's the armchair fan that craves action.

Your logic appears to be the reverse of what [I perceive] is the case.

    true i suppose...

just like a lot of people hate floyd, malinaggi, vitali, caulderon those few jump out at my mind... while they are highly technical it seems like even the boxing world doesnt respect it sometimes which surprises me because you would expect them to understand it more

yeah but you never ran into someone who you felt was a hard core fan... or even on this forum.. and they just say how boring and wack some tech boxers are... its interesting to me

    how do you see it?

    that could be right

What people dont like is fighters that take caution to the limit specially when they are facing guys that have no business being in the ring with them.

And it has nothing to do with being a technical fighter,Ruiz is boring and hes far from what you call a technical fighter.

I appreciate that style. I just don't like boxers who keep on claiming they'll be issuing a knockout only to be too defensive come fight night.

I guess they want to see a blood and guts war in the ring or somebody just knocked the hell out. Personally technical fighters in my opinoin are better fighters. It takes skill to do what they do not just a lot of punches and heavy breathing . To hit with out being hit is the way I would prefer to go anytime of the day.....lol

It's casual fans that technical boxing doesn't appeal to. If you're just dipping into the sport you just want to see a knockout and brawling

I consider myself a hard-core fan and I am a writer for several boxing magazines.

I certainly understand where you come from and I enjoy a technical fight far more than a brutal brawl. I know many people loved Gatti-Ward - personally, I can think of many fights I enjoyed more. Fights where the skill level was far higher.

I have a suspicion that the people who loves brawls are the ones that will defect to UFC type fighting at some time. They enjoy boxing for the guts element rather than for the 'noble art of self-defense' element. Now, in saying this I see, for example, Tyson as a highly technical fighter. So are Cotto, Kessler, Hopkins, RJJ, Calzaghe, Floyd etc.

As an aside, these definitions are fine within the thread, but in strictly correct terms technically correct boxing and brutal KO's are far from incompatible. Liston was a technicaly excellent boxer. Freddie Roach described Joe Louis as "the best textbook fighter of all time".

I realise that many people reading this thread will know this, but just for saying it.

    Great thread WWM......

I hate when fans will say "a guy is running, he must be a *****"........lots of viewers have no concept of what ring generalship is......this is boxing, not slug it out at the local bar type fighting.....you can win by piling up points you dont have to be a KO artist to be successful in the sport of boxing......
