Why get beat bad by Chad Dawson, when he could retire with an undefeated record, and dive into his pile of Coke
Namely because the majority of good names on his record were no longer prime versions of themselves when he beat them. Still, he was a genuine talent and is IMO one of the most underrated champions of recent times.
He’s a bit of can crusher , he was also semi featherfisted and anyway who wants to watch a boxer slap another boxer??
Yes, Calzaghe did. Ugly, but Hopkins basically got worked Josh Warrington style! Only judge who gave it Bhop was Adelaide Byrd! Hopkins had success at smothering & stalling Calzaghe at the new weight sure, that's because he's a cheating ****er at times! He started well but ultimately couldn't live with the pace & work rate. It wasn't overly controversial at all, because as the fight went along Bhop was looking for ways out.. Headbutting, holding, feigning injury from supposed low blows, punching on the back of the head - to spoil the fight. He even faked a low blow! Someone who's winning a fight doesn't do them things! Why do u think he did? It's because he couldn't beat JC fairly so adopted prison rules... It wasn't Joes best night IMO but he won 7/8 rounds of that stinker! His jab & work rate being the two most effective weapons for him that night.. Accept it & move on.
Cause he was slapping and "won" many questionable British stoppages against unknown opposition in his early days.
Only because he was working with glass hands. He did punch. Just mainly with the door knocking knuckles.
Really liked Joe. I think the Manfredo fight lost him a lot of good will. Wasn’t his fault the fight was stopped like that. But shouldn’t have fought him in hindsight
Great fighter who sadly could have done alot more but didn't .. One thing he tends to get flack for is some of his opponents . He gets slated for pudwell .. But from my recollection pudwell stepped on last minute for someone . Possibly Antwun echols . But I could be wrong The Hopkins fight .. Old Hopkins ... Still light heavy lineal number one champ .. Joe wasn't exactly young here either.. No problem with this fight at all. Jones fight was definitely 10 years too late though
A large chunk of his career was harmed by bad promoting combined with a few fighters wanting nothing to do with sharing a ring with him. Possibly he could have pushed harder for the big fights. The so-called slapping was a crude solution to fighting with hands which would otherwise inevitably break.
