Why is Wilder the biggest joke in boxing?

Wilder's resume isn't what it should be for a dominant champion, which he obviously thinks he is.

He has some solid names on it - Szpilka, Duhaupas, Stiverne, Washington - but when one considers that those are the best he's faced, AND SOME OF THEM OUTBOXED HIM ... it makes for thin reading. If Wlad had struggled with those guys like Wilder did, there'd be entire odes written by the usual suspects about his suckiness.

His chin is strongly suspect. He's been decked several times by guys that are not world beaters (Sconiers, Nichols etc) although he still won in the end. That defect could improve; lots of young fighters seem to lose their chinniness as they age.

The disconnect between his "destroyer persona" and what he's actually achieved is also what annoys people. I have no problem with somebody celebrating a win, but when they've just KO'd some morgue attendant and they celebrate like they unified HW, it touches a nerve.

Finally, it's also because he is simply not that good. He has big - maybe huge - power, fair enough, and there was a period where he started (possibly by accident, who knows) developing some footwork and a bit of a jab. It sort of made his spaz windmill technique an interesting oddity that a complete boxer was entitled to indulge in. It seemed as though he might make good on his promise. Then he proved against Washington that a big mook with a reasonable jab has every chance of UDing and maybe even KOing him.

He doesn't pass the eye test.

All that said, it's not lost for Wilder.

He has an unbeaten record, a belt, and his KO percentage is insane.

If he added, say, Joshua, Parker and another big name (Wlad? Povetkin? Ortiz?) to it, haters like myself would be forced to acknowledge that there's fire under the smoke and mirrors and that he might just be the real deal.

This is the thing about Wilder. He had many more fights, for a much longer period of time, against the type of opponent most fighters are done with a year -guys at the Dustin Nichols/Harold Sconiers level.
He didn't even "step up" to fight washed up fringe contenders like Harrison or shot former beltholders like Lyakhovich until 5-6 years into his career!

And even after winning a belt against Stiverne - who's been revealed to be much more mediocre than most thought after he beat Arreola - he's continued to fight handpicked mediocrities.

When it comes to padding records with mediocre opposition, Wilder is a class by himself. In 35 years of following boxing, he is the absolute worst case I have seen of this. His management makes Gerry Cooney's "wacko twins" look like real risk takers!!

 

it's less the skill of the HW division and more the skill of the people he's been fighting.

none of the top heavies in the current division would be hit by wilder's wild windmillin' and if he tried he'd be countered so damn hard he's gonna go bronze bambi on us again

Yep, that's true, but he seems to be slipping in that ability too.

Maybe he just had a bad night against Washington. It happens.

This guy could be a top player in the HW division if he sharpened his act up and developed some skills to go with his dimensions and power. But so far it's not happening.

 

Waiting for that magical, mystical day. But yeah.

 

He's 31 and in his 9th year as a pro, im not sure he is going to get any better. Especially with his attitude that he is already the best. Wilder seems about as smart as a rock tbh

If it wasn't for the corruption and the payoff the worm wouldn't have been inticed to stay on his stoll can would have come out and finished what he had started in the first round.

It's not only him that is a joke, the WBC has not forced him into fighting anyone with the pulse, yet he still has their title this long
