He isn't. Wlad has mentioned many times he has two mandatories, Thompson and Povetkin and will face Haye after them, providing neither man loses.

He first has to face his mandatory Thompson. After that it's Povetkin or Haye.

And i think that's a good thing. I would like Povetkin to get a few more wins and experience under his belt, to not look like a 12 fight Holmes opponent.

Right. No one thinks Wlad is ducking Povetkin. The truth is, the longer Povetkin waits, the better his chances will be. The Povetkin who had a rough go with Chambers would have been Ko'd by Wlad. I would like to see Povetkin win one more noteworthy fight.

Povetkin vs Wlad is a legacy type of fight. Two Olympic gold medal winners meeting in their primes. The last time this happened in the heavyweight was………..Frazier vs Ali in 1971! While Wlad vs Povetkin is not a super fight, it is a significant one. I would like to see it happen. If Wlad beats Thompson for his mandatory, I think we get this fight.

SuzieQ is wrong. Wlad seeks out belt holders and top challengers.

I'm guessing this thread is some sort of conversation starter and can't really be serious. His plans seem to be to fight Thompson(also a mandatory) and Povetkin, both, this year, back to back. Does the order really matter? Except the longer he waits the better Povetkin's chances. Noone can seriously think Wlad is ducking Povetkin.

    Lol :good

Wlad wants nothing more than to fight the best and unify. He will fight Povetkin and knock him out. One of the most frequently used words on esb is "ducking"

Wlad is stepping aside to fight a 37 year old featherfisted fighter instead of his mandatory IBF eliminater winner. thats the problem I have.

hello? thompson in the wbo mandatory and wlad got the exemption from the ibf. povetkin wil get his shot no later than november. povetkin will be taking a warm up in july. i dont see what the problem is here. that will be 3 fights for wlad in 08 with his opponents cumulative record at 68-1. it's funny....if wlad had opted for povetkin first, u would have people claiming he's ducking thompson for a greenhorn with 15 fights :nod

oh and that article is garbage.

"In the past, Wladimir has had trouble against big punchers"

Uh Povetkin is not a big puncher. he is about average. his straight ahead pressure style will get him KTFO as he will walk into jabs and rights. His workrate will be neutralized by wlad's control of distance and long left hand. Did you see what Chambers' straight right hand did to Povetkin's face after 2 rounds? He won 4 of the first 5 rounds but basically stopped throwing punches after that. Povetkin is gonna get steamrolled no question about it. Wouldn't surprise me if the thompson fight goes longer due to his cautious nature. All Povetkin will do is make Wlad have to work a little harder :yep

he never said that. he told haye to get in line because he was a nobody in the hw ranks, which is so true :rofl

all this bs press was manufactured by haye. the only ones pushing for wlad-haye right now are his delusional british fanboys and haye himself

How is it 'stepping aside' when he is fighting in July? He already got the go-ahead from the IBF so it's a perfectly valid, mandatory defense of his IBF and WBO titles.

It might simply be that the deadline for meeting Povetkin is longer than the deadline for meeting Thompson.

Considering he seriously believes that Vitali K. was afraid of Rahman and pulled out of the fight and retired for that reason, you can't really be surprised at this one. It's actually a small step up from that embarrassement.
