Why isn’t Sergio Martinez fighting the best at 160??

at this point barker is choosen as an easy option because martinez is hoping for a payday from cotto, pac, floyd I think so they dont want to risk it, its a bad match up and hurts sergio.

Still fighting pirog is way better than fighting some fukin barker.
If pac or floyd dont wanna fight him he can unify the belts at 160.
I'm sure also sturm would be willing to fight him since it's a big $ oportunity.

No one outside of Pirog wants to fight him. HBO preferred Geale for this last fight and instructed DiBella to go back to the negotiating table before they approved Barker, but Geale justifiably wants to make at least one hometown defense before going in to face Martinez as a heavy underdog.

Escopeta is correct on the Sturm fight, but one thing I'll note is that I don't think Martinez is very interested in fighting in Germany any time soon after the Macklin decision. He and DiBella are in the group that regards that fight as a clear robbery :)roll:). I believe though that Sturm's contract allows him to come to the States after one more fight, so we might see it next year.

As for the Pirog situation, I think there are several issues. First, Martinez and DiBella are really annoyed at how the WBO stripped him almost immediately after he won the belt. This is a different from Chavez and the WBC because there wasn't even a mandatory like Zbik; they just wanted to get the belt off of him and on Danny Jacobs as soon as possible and invoked an obscure, rarely enforced rule to try to make it happen. So Martinez isn't exactly crazy about fighting for that belt any time in the near future. Beyond that though, HBO hasn't had Pirog back at all and all of his momentum from the Jacobs KO has pretty much dried up. He did have an offer to fight in the US again earlier this year, but he and his promoter decided they'd rather fight in Russia. While it's understandable to want to maximize income and take care of his mandatory, it's not exactly the best decision if he wants to get Martinez. Finally, given the fact that HBO has completely blown through its budget for this year, it's very likely that Barker came more cheaply as a challenger than Pirog did.

Right, that's clearing up things a bit more. Thanks :good

Now we need to find out what the reasons are for the Pirog fight not happening. It's not a case of Pirog not being good enough to be considered, because he's certainly better than Barker. And it could be because of the following:

But let's see if there are other reasons...

Martinez is very good fighter but comeon.. Guy won with dzindziruk who fought like once for 2 years and with decent fighters like pavlik or williams and now he's some kind of monster who's everybody scared of. I'm pretty sure sturm, pirog, golovkin would like to fight martinez.

Ideally Martinez would do his best to unify the 2 middleweight divisions, get the fighters with the other titles and School them all/ko them.

offer them attractive paydays, fight in their backyard, fight on whatever network you need to fight on.

    Cotto/margarito winner

    chavez jnr

    alverez

    sturm

    pirog

    or lara/k 9 bundrage.

wasting his time fighting macklin, easy win for him.

Well I shouldn't have made it sound like it was strictly a matter of no one wanting to fight him, but instead said that all of the top contenders save Pirog are either disinterested or unavailable. Given Sturm's career though, I'm not really sure he's done a lot to earn the benefit of the doubt. Golovkin, as already mentioned, cannot fight in the States until his contract with Universum runs out at the end of the year. I'm hopeful though that he'll get a push; HBO was kind of touting him during the last Chavez fight.

He's beaten Pavlik, Williams and Dzirnick, Chavez wants no part of him, Pirog is unknown (but I think eventually will happen), Abraham is staying at 168, who else is there?

Well, the Sturm problem should be pretty obvious...same reason why Hopkins never faced him, why Taylor never faced him, why Pavlik never faced him. Same reason why no linear middleweight champion has ever faced Sturm before, during, or after their reign...Sturm is obviously the greatest, most ducked middleweight in middleweight history. "The" champion has been protected from Felix as long as FS has been a pro. Simple as that. That's why they call him Felix "The White Burley" Sturm.
