You have to look at it from their perspective. They need it to make money. In order to achieve that they need as many viewers as possible (US audience in special) > as many americans fighters as possible. No American fighter was a champion at 168 so they have to limit themselves to 3 USA vs 3 champs in order to make the tourney known for having "the best fighters out there". For that they also need to make a compromise in the 3 champs category because 1 champ was special , he was "The Man" and "the #1 Supper middleweight" his name is Mikkel Kessler ... this guy just happened to have the same promoter with Arthur Abraham(who's entry in the tourney was probably a condition for MK to join the super6)He was also a world champion but at 160. He was having problems with his weight and wanted to move up. Being an ex champ and being undefeated made him as good as any other champs at 168 and put him in the 3 champs category.By doing this there was only one place left in the tourney. 2 names where probably mentioned for the last place. Carl Froch and Lucian Bute. Froch was less expensive and he probably was considered a more exciting fighter than Bute because Carl was coming after a good fight with Pascal and Taylor wile Bute was coming after a easy defense against Joppy after Allan Green turned a offer down and looked bad in the last round against the tough challenger Librado Andrade and only looked spectacular against an tough but small Zuniga . So they choose Froch over Bute. After that HBO saw that Bute was a very gifted fighter and an exciting one also they put their hands on him making impossible for him to enter the super six after the departure of Jermain Taylor ... who knows if they were ever going to invite him considering that they actually prefered to keep the 3 American fighters rule by inviting Allan Green.

...too bad they didn't invite him so that he could turn it down... then it would be an open and shut case.

From what I read around the web, Bute's promoter were never asked in.

Here a link where you can read it:
    http://www.fightnews.com/Boxing/more-super-six-quotes-17398

Then when Taylor quit the tournament, Bute was with HBO and his team thought that in the long term it will be better to stay with HBO and wait for the tourney to finish. And they comment about the beginning of the tourney, at the time, it was more important for Bute to clear the Andrade drama than anything else.

Here a link (in french sorry) where you can read it:
    http://www.fanatique.ca/boxe/taylor-quitte-le-super-six-bute-en-est-toujours-exclu+5360.html

Here what Bute thought about it: "My objective at the time was to beat Librado Andrade. It was a question of honor. Therefore I wasn’t available at the time. Also, the rematch with Andrade was on HBO After Dark, my first appearance on this major TV network. It was a great opportunity to showcase my talent. As for the second question, I pick Andre Ward to win the tournament."

    at this link: http://www.fightnews.com/Boxing/qa-lucian-bute-2-33929

Here some other Q&A in the same article:

"And would you fight the winner, whoever he is?

I certainly would like to fight the winner, when the time comes.

Will American fans ever see you fight in the United States or are you going to stick to your home base of Quebec?

I will fight in the USA if I have to, no problem. This said, I have a good fan base in Quebec, Interbox can organize major fights for me here and HBO can cross the border to broadcast my fights. One thing is sure: I have to fight in the US to improve my career.

    Champ, your wishes for 2010?

To defend my belt versus good opponents–defend it successfully, of course–and to improve my reputation in the United States."

So, Bute wasnt invited and he wanted first of all to clear Andrade, then when Taylor quit, Bute's people decide to stay with HBO and wait for the winner to have a mega fight. Until then he wants to become popular in U.S. and to fight there if he have to.

I know Ken said that but I think it's only an excuse for justifying himself to not even trying to approach Bute and his team.

Bute will most likely fight on ESPN's FNF in his next bout and they do so to make sure they keep getting exposure in the US. It's not always only about money for everyone.

The fact is Hershman didn't even approach INTERBOX to see if they'd be willing to be part of this. From what Bute's team have leaked out, they would have accepted to make less in order to be in it....before HBO got them under their wings.

That "sound good" excuse is most likely there to just hide the fact they didn't want Bute in that tournament from the very start !

The Sauerlands didn't want him there and SHOWTIME wanted Americans. Everything else is irrelevant !!!

He was invited, but didn't enter. My guess for his motivation would be risk vs reward, he's on HBO now being built as a star and has a really good regular following in French Canada, Showtime pays less and it'd be a very tough thing to come out of this tournament, so he passed. Hopefully he'll fight the winner as he's clearly the besy super-middle not involved in the tourney.

    He's under a HBO contract.
The Super 6 is a Showtime event.
