Why isn't camacho....

Higher than vargas.

Almost at the level of hearns/hagler/duran/leonard.

 

He was EXTREMELY talented, and was an excellent fighter at 130 and 135, but drugs and partying sent him off course. As did the shots he took from Edwin Rosario.

I think he also had too much of a survival instinct in the ring. He gets tagged hard, and is more concerned with not getting stopped rather than winning the fight.

He had the potential to be an ATG, but didn't achieve it.

 

That speed is outrageous.

Pretty much as Thread Stealer said. Excellent fighter and talent but his temperament didn't push him to greatness. I might call him an arguably great fighter though, personally. One of those guys I can see if you would say he was not great, and could see if you said he was. You could argue it either way, imo. I definitely rate him above Vargas though.

 

well he lost to Chavez in a megafight and greg haugen in a similar but smaller fight (major losses)but it's not so much his losses but his style of fighting that gives him the reputation he has all speed no power a better version of paulie mallinagi!!you get it!!and yeah a semi great like fernando vargas!!!i think vargas gave you more action in those couple losses than camacho ever did in his wins!!!

 

He didnt have KO power for the most part but he wasn't feather fisted either and he's above Vargas, he wasn't a semi great he was above that more of a elite fighter that never quite became one of the greats was never far from being one but it never materialized I guess.

 

He boxed on until a ridiculously old age for a guy who didn't care much about becoming an ATG.

 

i grew up watching the guy trust me try watching something else other than youtube highlights!like a real fight of his!!!!he would get tagged and act like a ***** and look at his k.o ratio by the time he fought haugen (still undefeated)and it sucks ass!!!!so keep trying to make a case for his power but the numbers don't lie!!!!!DUDE!!!!!!

 

Well he got hit a lot in the Chavez fight. I think a lot of fighter would have quit between rounds

 

I think people began to lose respect esp. when drugs became more important than his career. Camacho fought the best and had a great style. A lot people say he never was the same after the Rosario fight. Camacho brought entertainment to boxing and loved to be hated, which made him a good attraction to the sport. And if there is one thing Camacho is very underrated is he has never been KO even when he has fought the best of the best, more amazing if you see the names in his resume...

 

At 130, he looked like a great talent and he showed flashes of genius at 135 but I do think he was changed by the Rosario fight - he was on his bike a lot more and he seemed a little less confident (inside the ropes anyway!). He had terrific handspeed and I think at 130, he had decent pop on his punches.

He definitely deserves praise for his heart though - he took beatings from Chavez as well as prime versions of Oscar and Tito without quiting.

He was very good at his best but never great.
