Many people think Carnera was an excellent boxer. Why is he the only champion from the 1930's that isn't in the IBHOF. Schmeling, Sharkey, Baer, Braddock and of course Louis are all in, but not Carnera. Should a petition be started to get him in?
I would have actually thought so, if sharkey, Braddock etc are. I'd have thought he'd be in the same criteria as the other s. End of the day he did get the belt as did the other s.
He's certainly as deserving as Braddock and Sharkey, Willard, Johansson. Young Stribling is in. The reason Carnera isn't in is probably an ongoing prejudice against him, since American "historians" decided to use him as some sort of scapegoat for all the fraud, hype and dubious record-building present in the sport.
Anyone ever see the movie The Harder They Fall (1956). Max Baer, Jersey Joe Walcott, and Pat Comiskey are in the movie. The character Toro Moreno is based on Carnera, a simple peasant giant who can't fight gets taken to the USA fights a string of fixed fights, gets a shot at Buddy Brannon (played by Max Baer), gets beaten to a pulp, and robbed of all his money by the mob. I have it on dvd. It was Humphrey Bogart's last film before he died.
No awkward questions please!lol There are 31 foreign fighters in the Old Timers Category . Including Scottish Irish Welsh Danish British French Barbadian Virgin Islands Japanese Australian Cuban Panamanian Czech Filipino
I genuinely don’t know to be honest. There are worse heavyweights in, and there are less famous heavyweights in. Even if he was as bad as his detractors claim, he ought to take it based on being such a controversial figure. It seems to be a quite incredible decision.
One thing i have noticed is that the few posters who get so very touchy defending Marciano, are now the exact same ones attempting to defend Carnera. Pattern .? Aside from the height differential.......
