I actually think he’s been getting more overrated more recently, people picking him to beat Mercer etc, I think too much emphasis has been getting placed onto ‘fundamentals’ in terms of people’s picks in H2H matchups, better fundamentals don’t guarantee the win, and Chagaev’s record suggests he was decent, but not impressive at world level, he absolutely wouldn’t beat the best version of Mercer for example, Browne was landing uppercuts with frequency against him, imagine was Mercer would do, who is much quicker and has better technique? He’d eat Chagaev alive on the inside, get him against the ropes and pound him, Chagaev also doesn’t have enough fleet of foot to stay away like an Ibragimov or Byrd would.
Wladimir hardly lost a round for the most part of a decade. He made a lot of otherwise very good fighters look hopeless.
Insane domination. I think it will be very long while before we see something like that again especially at heavyweight.
Nobody wants to see another man physically molest his way to victory over undersized and undermatched opponents again.
What , you mean the sick patient who wasn't given medical clearance to fight Nikolai? So instead of fighting Nikolai , Wlad fought the sick patient instead, giving him only 4 weeks notice. HBO passed on showing a behemoth Vs a man not medically fit to box. What an amazing achievement for Klitschko!
Giving credit to Wlad for beating Brewster is the same as giving credit to Lucas Browne for beating Chagaev.
It does not help his fan appreciation situation that he looked so bad in the biggest fight of his career.
Chagaev for the Browne fight was at the same stage of his career as Mercer when he was playing dead against Briggs.
Mercer was 44 and a walking corpse when he fought Briggs. Ruslan was 38 , WBA Regula Champ on a 7 fight win streak and just coming off a one round KO over world title challenger Fran Pianeta. Not the same. Chagev when he was favourite to beat Browne was around the same prime if not a more than Sanders when he fought Vitali. He was way primer than Brewster in the WK rematch.
He's only less than 6 months older than Browne, and he was 37, whereas Mercer against Briggs was only like 2 years younger than what Chagaev is today (Mercer was 44), and he’d damaged a nerve in his neck which massively affects not only how you can move, but how you take punches, and it also massively distracts you.
