Horse before the cart. Put it this way. Say Hopkins was not the top guy after beating Tarver, but like number 3 or 4 arguably. Calzaghe then beats Hopkins, but then Hopkins does something to put himself at the top of the heap. Would you automatically replace him with Calzaghe? Probably not.
Margarito has a recent unavenged loss on his record to Williams. Until he avenges it can he truly claim he's the better boxer? Answer is simple. If Margarito beats Williams and the WW championship title is his.
actually i'm a bit confused at the number 2 spot, i feel it should be a tie between cotto and williams. I can agree with cotto being number 2 but i feel that williams should somehow also have a case to become no. 2 its like a circle situation williams>margarito>cotto>quintana>williams>quintana
Hate to chime in with the same thing that's already been said 50 times over but, he has a recent loss to a fellow belt holder. I don't think that anyone here is putting Paul Williams above Margo, they're just not putting Margo in the position of THE champ.
IMO the reason he isnt ranked the Champion is probably because Ring feels that Floyd will be back soon.
What? Why would Margarito have to beat Clottey to be called champ. Last timei checked he already did. As for this thread I guess we will just have to wait till the fight gets made.
Ring fulfills the vacant championship when the no.1 fighter fights the no.2 fighter. Cotto and Margo weren't ranked 1 and 2 when they fought. Right now Williams and Margo are 1 and 2. If they fought eachother, it would be for the ring title.
Here is one scenario that is a little bit similar. I used to wrestle in high school. I forget how many were in the tournament bracket per weight class. But on the first round if you lost you werent exactly eliminated. The winner of course advanced to the next round and the loser would get another match and if he won that he could still advance. And pretty much take a longer way getting there until finally he could get to the final and possibly be champion. PW beat Margo then Margo went to the bottom of the bracket and had a chance at redemption the longer way. and lets say along this tournament PW lost to Quintana so he did not make it to the finals. Margarito however did make it to the finals and won crowning him the champion. Does that mean Margarito is not the champion just because he lost earlier in the tournament? Before you say Im just a fanboy like some people already have you must not know im a Cotto fan. Actually if you looked up my history on threads i used to call Margarito a one trick pony a few years ago and gave him no chance to make the elite at WW. He proved me wrong so of course i gotta give him props. However i am still a solid Cotto fan before a Margarito fan.
Here's a thought. Margarito didnt beat the CHAMP.. he beat the #1 ranked guy..which makes him the #1 ranked guy.. PW is the second and needs to fight him to be the "champ".... Im a huge margarito fan, im talking before he won the WBO... but he needs to beat Williams to solidify him being the champ.
