I just checked out his Instagram, he gets around 6k likes per post. GGG gets 100k likes per post. Kovalev is more accomplished than GGG, better resume and is likely to beat one of the best fighters in the game. Even if Kovalev KOs Ward I don't expect his popularity to grow by much. Such a shame
True,I'd of said his nationality but then again we can say the same about Ward his opponent,he ain't very popular either,IMO pay per view has ruined the sport somewhat, you only have to go off this place where so many seem more interested in how much said guy is earning and how many buys they got, never hear a thing about wanting em to fight the best in their own division. This fight should be appreciated by all boxing fans,I hope they both get the payday they both deserve but my fear is pay per view will kill this fight?
Spot on. PPV needs to die. This will be on a vacation Saturday when everyone is traveling or getting ready to travel and they will be at home or aboard and this fight would be perfect on regular HBO to build on the sports section. The money they think they are going to make they won't because of all the other stuff you can do besides buy PPV.
I have said that plenty of times. I believe that people can see themselves as GGG more than Kovalev from a vicarious view. Same with why people imitate Mayweather and rappers pretending to be rich, it's all vicarious living. Reminds me of a joke from Eddie Murphy Raw when he went to see Rocky.... Two words: Casual Fans. People on Instagram just follow the hype, and GGG is very hyped up. He's good no doubt, but many people forget that there are greater fighters.
Sly Abel Sanchez' "Mexican style" gimmick and purportedly molding GGG into another JCC style. Sanchez knows the Latino mind set especially how they react to fighters so pandering his charge to them was done by design and has been successful regardless of how ardently so many claim otherwise.
I think Golovkins "like ability" also plays a role. When you show women GGG and KRUSHER, they will automatically be drawn to GGG as he's the "cuter" guy whereas Krusher has that mean look.
Because he doesn't say stupid **** like, "BIG DRAMA SHOW", or "GOOD BOY", or my favorite "GGGIVE ME MY BELT!".. It's ridiculous, Kovalev has the better resume and is chasing greatness against a fighter GGG avoided, yet GGG gets the glory.
Not being famous I don't understand what makes people famous these days. Kim Kardashian, Paris Hilton, and Snooki confuse the hell out of me. Why do so many people watch American Idol or the Big Bang Theory? It's a mystery.
Because kovalev is the truth which doesn't correlate well with this new fake it till you make it generation. Hence the Jeremy Lins, ggg's, kardashions, trump etc
PPV has to take some of the blame. Boxing is going from a niche to boutique market. And the casuals that are buying the latest crop of very noncompetitive PPVs isn't helping at all. Just read somewhere that Arum thinks that by handling the broadcast of his next PPV and thereby not having HBO replay it a week later will increase PPV sales. Sometimes fighters take "stay busy fights" and that's fine, but they should be on free TV or at a substantially reduced PPV fee. Woefully out of touch me thinks. So what is the cost of the Manny fight in your guys market? I'm guessing it's gonna be around 70 or 80 bucks where I'm at, and probably the same for the Kovalev fight. I've bought 1 PPV in the last 3 years I think, maybe longer. Quite frankly the price isn't justifiable to me anymore vs the entertainment value. As I've said many times before, my personal boycott continues. I just wish others would join in. Hit those promoters below the belt, in their wallets, it's the only thing they understand! More specifically to the threads original question as to why GGG is more popular than Kovalev it's because it IS a popularity contest. Records, accomplishments etc don't have anything to do with it. ( I am a fan of both btw) GGG comes across as a more personable personality while Kovalev seems to come across as an ******* most of the time.
