The Mexican fans supporting GGG do so because he is a FIGHTER!!! How can they support a coward they've named El Pollo ???? He embarrassed the proud Mexican fans

Mostly due to his lack of personality. If he was a Ricardo Mayorga type trash talker, he would be much more popular.

It's a real shame Kovalev isn't a bigger star, his talent warrants it. But the fact is he doesn't connect well with the average sports fan or even boxing fan. In terms of personality he's lacking in this department and the division is devoid on any real stars or fan popular fighters that he could play off to increase his profile.

Disagree with the above re his personality/lack thereof. He is actually quite funny and affable in most media encounters. That said, if you observe him now in the build up to this Ward fight he's quite laconic and surly. He's being asked some pretty dumb questions from some of these interviewers though, so that's understandable.

No one has suggested his lower profile could be the fault of Main Events...Maybe they should be doing a better job in putting his name out there, for more mainstream exposure...

GGG has been marketed as a 'product', whereas Kovalev is merely an excellent boxer, plain and simple. Ergo - casuals have heard of the former but not the latter, despite Krusher being a far better fighter with a much stronger resume.

I couldn't agree more Kovalev has dared to be great and takes on all comers but gets no hype. Kovalev should have 3x as many fans as GGG does.

GGG has more aggressive marketing and promotion, and a more fan friendly style and personality.

I don't agree that Kovalev is the more accomplished fighter. That's based on beating a 50 year old who fought most of his career at middleweight. Let's see what happens with Ward.

Almost impossible for a Slavic fighter to become very popular in a media market where all segments were taught to hate you growing up and in many cases into adult hood. GGG is popular because they prostrate him and pander his style to the largest ethnic base that essentially drives the sports popularity.

Nationality is a factor as well as his character. Also, promoter makes and manager can make a difference. He is P4P top 3, but it doesn´t really matter because other P4P top 10 fighter know how to fight and make it entertaining as well. I like Kovalev a lot. He is one of the elite fighters at the moment (Kovalev, Golovkin, Loma, Rigo, Ward, Crawford, Gonzalez, Mikey Garcia).

What do you mean? Russia has been public enemy no 1 since the cold war. And most recently the establishment media wont shutup about the evil russians.

Exactly right, call me cynical but Canelos next fight was on free view no?whats the upshot from his injury and him missing a fight, does it mean his next fight will still be free View?

So much respect for Thurman who said after the success of him n porter that all his fights ought to be on free view as the fan base is there for it,didn't Spence V Bhundu do massive nos as well?

I know it's not the same but for Canelo v Khan and GGG v Brook where I knew the result anyway I chose to listen to both on the radio.
Ward v Kovalev would do big nos on free view, though I must confess I don't know how big nos on free view correlate to how much the fighters get paid as appose to PPV.

hes made 3 acceptable defences (Pascal 2, Hopkins 1) in 3 year plus some coasting ones, has unified by age 32-ish and is about to face a guy who is easily the number SMW ever. that's not bad, though obviously its not the stuff of HoF. Hes clearly elite.

3G has made perhaps 2 acceptable defences during his apparently lengthy reign. Whether he is elite or not is yet to be established, which is kinda cringeworhty given hes nearly 35. The path of the cowardzaghe for sure.
