I have read Johnson was not real complimentary of Louis. Didn't Nat Fleischer rate Johnson over Louis when he saw Louis "live" and had enough "feel" of the old days to make such a judgement? Johnson was a brute and would not be intimidated by Louis.......and he fought all the great black fighters of his era.....who as a group was equivalent to Louis' challengers. Fleischer might have been right.
I think that Johnson has a very serious chance. My impression of Johnson, however, is of a fighter who is at his absolute best when things are going his way. If Louis gets to him, he may find a way to stop Johnson, who had a great, rather than a world class chin. But I make Johnson a slight favourite here.
Johnson's chance lies in befuddling Louis and wearing him down. Tho, I think that Louis would take away johnson's jab by jabbing back. Louis also was a very quick-handed combination puncher and that would give Johnson trouble as well. Still a very intriguing matchup!!! Grebfan9 www.firstroundboxing.com
Johnson never fought an advanced killing machine like Louis, I see louis stopping him late but Johnson would not be an easy fight
Hey Bummy, Yeah, I think that Louis would eventually prevail too. BTW, I guess you are a fan of the very hard punching Bummy Davis. Davis had a left hook that could really crack!!! Grebfan9 www.firstroundboxing.com
The two men fought in entirely different eras, really. If they fought under Johnson's rules, then I would obviously favor Johnson. I might go as far as to say that Louis would need a knockout to win - I don't think he could outpoint Johnson at his own game. On the other hand, Johnson would most likely DQ himself under Louis' more modern ruleset. If he doesn't get disqualified, he would either get outpointed badly (in no small part from point deductions) or stopped.
By either rules, Louis destroys Johnson. The Galveston Giant is a supremely over-rated fighting machine whilst Louis was probably the greatest of such at his weight. Not even close. The whole scenario as envisioned by some here leaves my head shaking. Shame on you for being so lacking in knowledge.
No, on both counts. If these two fought it's be a real tough one to call, I'd ever so slightly favour Louis but wouldn't be laying any money down. Johnson would be a highly formidable foe for any fighter in history that he'd share a ring with.
I'd pick both Joe to beat Johnson. Joe threw short punches so Johnson's parring would not come much into play. Joe had that little back shuffle that brought men into range. And Joe has a corner in Blackburn. 20 is not much different than 15, but 45 is. Again Blackburn in the difference.
I like Louis, but I think Johnson would bother him. Louis did not like to be smothered by his own admission. Louis could be bulled around the ring, and had footwork / balance issues on offense or defense. Louis on film did not adapt well, and that would cost him vs Johnson. Having said that, I do think Louis power would bail him out of a mauling type of fight similar to Godoy. I see a mid round KO here, with Johnson perhaps being up by a small margin before the stoppage.
Johnson was a defensive master and perhaps a tad quicker, but Louis was an offensive master and hit way harder and knew how to finish. Somewhere in there Louis nails Johnson and takes him out. If he doesn't, I simply think Louis' aggression and better offensive output and effective power eeks him a decision despite being frustrated.
This first thought that entered my mind about this match is that Joe Louis is the last Fighter Jack Johnson should attempt to mug with, the second thought was that he almost certainly would, not only because Johnson perhaps thought he might gain some physcological advantage From it, but he simply seemed to enjoy it, a bit like a naughty child pulling the wings off of insects, perhaps sending a massage to future challengers, and the "plotters" of the white population not actually members of his fan club, a sort of forerunner to Tyson's" how dare you challenger me with your primative skills " message, also I understand Johnson in later years harboured some resentment towards Louis for being so universally liked and respected Johnson I feel would be on a mission to humiliate and then hurt However. Louis is not for mocking, he is neither a small Burns or ketchel, or rusty slow Jefferies, he is a cold-eyed precision predator, who does not waste anything, and will not be wild and leave Johnson wild swings and misses to exploit, Joe like's to see the whites of the eyes, up close and personal, but the gold of the teeth will do just fine, Joes combination punching from head to body and back again would be something i doubt Johnson has encountered before, at least not with that power and precision, also Joe can catch Jack with a single out of the Blue Thunderbolt to put Johnson down, and is much more capable of finishing the Job then Ketcjel . Jack does have chances of course, if Tommy farr and Billy Conn ect could give Joe very competitive matches, so could Jack, - if he was attentive, well disciplined, and 100% respectful of Louis, but that would I think go against Jack's flamboyant carefree nature, and he certainly wouldnt want Joe to see he was in anyway concerned by him Ultimately the bedrock of Jack's Style was about Negation, Stopping his opponent doing what he intends, and intermittently Jack surges into his opponent to show him "You cant hurt me, but I can hurt you anytime I choose"..But for Me Joe is too much of a Precision Predator to be distracted and diverted from his style, Joe will stalk, but keep Jack occupied with his jab e advances, Jack may think he has Slowed Louis down to the Pace he intends Joe to Adopt, But Joe had very fast accurate hands, poised, just waiting for the correct moment to Strike, it may be that Joe is Just waiting for Jack to make one of his sudden surge attacks, but I feel at some stage the patient Joe, right hand cocked, will catch Jack, either coming in or being too slow in pulling back, with a big straight Right to floor Jack, Jack would probably get up and try to Mug to the crowd that he is fine, even appear to applaud Louis, but when the Ref waves the bout on Louis's true predatory instincts are unleashed..And Jack is brutally dispatched, it may take another flooring or two in the round, But Louis's abilty to launch Withering combinations, with almost laser-guided accuracy, to body and head, means that the renown skills of Johnson to parry (single) punches is as useful a chocolate teapot ! The ref waves it off with Johnson on the canvas, too dazed and hurt to even think about shielding his eyes from the overhead Ring Lights Louis circa 9th for me . ( Later Souvenir hunters scour the ring when it becomes known that Jack has a gold Tooth Missing !)
Jack Johnson is a crafty defensive specialist. I think he could out box Louis in almost the same manner that Walcott did. Prime vs Prime, I'd have to take Jack Johnson by a possible 3 point victory. Louis would probably hurt him early and win at least 5 or 6 rounds out of a 15 round fight. Johnson dominates until the final bell.
