    Very interesting read. http://coxscorner.tripod.com/alilouis.html

This is a real 50-50 match to me. I feel In a series of three, both men would have at least one win over each other. In the end, I wouldn't favor anybody over Ali, but I give Joe Louis the best chance.

Goes a bit too far in harping on the RRJ-like myth that because Ali was athletic, he is technique was garbage. He had flaws like any fighter.

Louis wasn't a pressure fighter in the same way Frazier was. Interesting point about Foreman's robotic but effective stalking though. Louis could have emulated the Norton gameplan, but I could just as easily see Ali outdoing Conn's performance with more flash and mobility. I don't think Louis's patience would be rewarded.

Man I would love to see it though.

It would basically turn on what plan Louis turned up with.

Ali only had one plan, which he could vary slightly.

If Louis came up with a better plan, then it became a different fight!

It would be an interesting bout. Louis had the hand speed to counter Ali. I would bet on Ali but a Louis win would not be a huge surprise.

    Joe Louis would have whipped.

    Muhammad Ali!

Joe Louis had problems with Tommy Farr who was an outside fighter like Ali. Joe Louis didn't have good enough footwork to keep up with Ali. Louis had a weak chin also. Ali would stop him late in the fight.

Louis would have had a puncher's chance at best. But most likely outcome is that Ali absolutely embarrasses him.

Louis Farr performance was not representative and Louis dominated.

Louis had weak chin? Nonsense. Provide any evidence of it.

Joe:"When I was champ...I went on what they called the Bum Of The Month tour!"
Ali:"You calling me a bum, Joe?"
Joe:"You would've been on the tour!"

Have you ever read the book Joe Louis: 50 years and American Hero? They say it damn near every other paragraph. Joe Louis was one of the first fighters I watched when I first started boxing and he is still one of my top 5 all time favorites. If anything this proves that his skills were truly great. He didn't have a glass chin like khan or anything close to it, I'm just saying he had a weaker than average chin which he protected very well. It wouldn't effect the outcome against Ali though, Ali wouldn't go for a knockout. Ali would dance all night because if Louis catches him then its gonna be a bad night.

Louis weakness were slow feet, just okay defense, often nailed by right hands, trouble vs. fighters who have good jabs, not very strong in the clinches.

Can we mostly agree with the above?

Ali had very fast feet, his best power punch was the right hand, had an all time very fast jab, and was strong in the clinches. And Louis is giving up some height, weight, and reach as well.

On paper, this looks like a glamor match-up, but in the ring, Ali's very strong in the areas where Louis was weak, and unlike Conn, or Walcott Ali had a great chin, not likely to be taken out they way they were.

I see Ali via wide UD, 10 rounds to 4 with one even.

Louis had economical footwork, people mistake for "slow feet".
Despite all the talk to the contrary and all the folklore, he did well against boxers in his prime.

This would be a good fight. Louis has all the tools to beat Ali, and Ali has all the tools to beat Louis.
