I love this bull**** "The true, oldschool ATGs were never knocked out". Did you guys check pictures and some weight numbers on the old ATGs? They were scrawny skinny guys, weighing 180-195 lbs, they were light-heavyweights for Christ's sake. Many of the guys in the Great Depression during the 30s had little proper training, no proper nutrition nor conditioning. People were living in the streets and were boxing for a couple dollars, just to make a modest living. Ever wonder why one-punch knockouts at FW (112) are much more rare than at HW (200)? Higher weight and punching power produces more knockouts, plain and simple. Does anybody here seriously think that if Joe Louis or Schmeling were hit with the power of men like Lewis, Tua or Wlad they would have never hit the floor, not even once? If all HWs that we're comparing were regularly weighing 200-240 lbs in top condition there would have been numerous one punch knockouts among the old ATGs.
The guy is blatantly not from London either. English people do not say the word jackass. I will put money on him not being at the Lewis - Mercer fight ( which i watched, great, close fight but Lewis won for me )and if he cant recall any great fighters being ko'd with one punch he isnt really a boxing fan at all. Sad twat ,Lennox was a great fighter, end of.
Who CARES if he fought the guys that starched him again, it hardly erases the FACT that he is the ONLY top level HW champ taken out early by fighters on this level when he held the title. The only one. Lewis was a great fighter - just not as great as some like to make out. Holyfield, and arguably Tyson, were both greater. You never saw those guys starched early when they held the title. Hell, Holyfield's NEVER been taken out early like that and he's still fighting at almost 50!!!!
Unfortunately Lewis never had the opportunity to fight anybody at that level. Much the same as most of the top ten atgs.
Lewis is very good. I just think his resume is short of placing him in the top 10 of all heavyweight fighters that ever lived. He's a 6'4" super long reach, gigantic heavyweight who shouldn't have had a problem with most of the guys he beat. He's not a 5'10" slugger. He's a big, powerful, rangy boxer. He was built to win HW titles. That or play in the NFL.
Yeah, I don't think any of the critics are arguing that Lewis is NOT great, just that he is not as great as some like to make out. As someone who dissents from the Lewis overrating that is popular with some boxing fans today, what really bothers me is the attitude that it's not even debatable. Given all the holes in Lewis's record - the early stoppages, the facing other greats late in their careers, not facing other top fighters in the era (Bowe), the questionable decisions (Mercer) - this IS very much a debatable subject. But the Lewis supporters treat this as if it can't be argued that he's top ten. Hardly!
so is that how you judge a fighter by assessing their best single win or do you judge a fighter taking a look at his victory resume over their entire career?
Yeah. Buster Douglas beat Tyson once under exceptional circumstances so I now proclaim him to be the #2 HW of all time, and top 20 p4p ATG. It's indisputable.
