We have to go back to 2005.

Zab Judah vs Cory Spinks.. a fight to determine the overall champ at 147. Judah wins by KO.

Judah then loses that title to Baldomir.

Floyd beats Baldomir establishing himself as the champ at 147.

Floyd beats Oscar and Hatton and then retires, thus giving up his title.

Miguel Cotto and Margarito have a fight to determine who THE MAN is at 147.

    Margarito KOs Cotto.

    Mosley KO's Margarito.

    Floyd beats Mosley.

Therefore Floyd is the welterweight CHAMP and holds the Ring title until somebody beats him or he retires.

    Agree?

    Not for me.

"Miguel Cotto and Margarito have a fight to determine who THE MAN is at 147." Is the weak link IMHO, Margarito was ranked #4 by the Ring at the time of the fight, and then of course that makes the remainder of the arguments invalid.

The Cotto/Marg fight can only have a thin case made for it as a new lineal title fight. It wasn't to unify titles (I beleive Margarito had to vacate one to make the fight so it wasn't their fault) and it wasn't clear cut best 2 guys in the division as Paul Williams and Shane Mosley were up there too, with Williams having beaten Margarito fairly recently.

Baldomir was lineal, Mayweather beat him, he had a semi-retirement, don't know if he gets stripped for that. But if he did Mosley won the tourny against Marg/Cotto after Williams moved up, so he becomes lineal, so Mayweather won it back from him then

    The old 'Triangle Theory'.

    It never works.

Floyd faced Hatton instead of Cotto.

That in it's self should tell you all you need to know.

Mayweather got stripped after retiring. I think you can maybe make an argument that he should have kept the title during that semi-retirement but having stripped him he hasn't done enough to get it back IMHO.

(Not even beating Mosely after Mosely "won" a fictional tournament.;))

For me, Floyd is still the no.1 Welterweight because he beat Baldomir. Sporadic fighting, yes, but he's still the 'linear' no.1, even if he hasn't 'defended' it against the best fighters around.

EDIT: Of course, Welterweight lineage is assumed from Marty Servo getting battered by Graziano and Ray Robinson picking up the vacant strap.

Thats probably my take on it Flea. I think titles should be won and lost in the ring where possible but, having been stripped, beating Mosely in a "A beat B, C beat B" scenario doesn't cut it as having "regained" the title IMHO.

The only way to really pick up the baton nowadays i 'the man' moves up/retires is -have the consensus 2&3 fight or to win all the belts (I would assume that would see either man prove themselves the definitive no.1 because if 2 and 3 don't fight, one of them is clearly playing catch up)

I'm pretty sure all lineage is 'assumed' by now to be honest.

This pisses me off. Styles make fights and I remember Mayweather, Margarito, Mosley, Williams, Cotto, Quintana, Cintron, Clottey etc all in the mix at 147.

Mayweather only fought a far from fresh Mosley out of that lot, that's it!

Williams, Margarito, Cotto or even Cintron could have caused Floyd problems IMO, so I cant accept that he is number one.

Pacquiao has only just arrived on the scene by comparison and has managed wins against Margarito, Cotto, Mosley and Clottey. Again, this is my opinion, but he has fought and proven himself against a wider range of those Welterweight names, even if they too weren't exactly fresh either.

Mayweather opted for the money fights in Hatton and Oscar which is understandable but it doesn't give him a pass, and also Pacman has beaten those two as well.

It's a travesty May/Pac has not happened, both must carry blame for that.

    Do I want to see Mayweather V Ortiz/Berto/Khan or Pacquiao V Bradley/Berto/Ortiz?

No thanks, not at the expense of the big one, it's bollocks.

Yes, but he did 'beat the man, who beat the man, who beat the man', and goes back as far as De La Hoya. If you don't see him as losing against Trinidad, and don't see a break between the two times Oscar was the 'man who beat the man' it goes all the way back, without a break in 'lineage', to Don Curry.

i think it is generally accepted that floyd is the lineal champ at 147
