Yelena Isinbayeva (Woman) just set a world record in the Pole Vault which would have won the mens Pole Vault final in 1964....

    1975 - 100 Metre world record 9.9
2008 - Usain Bolt coasts to time of 9.69

    1980 - Mens freestyle swimming world record - 1.49.16
    2008 - Phelps sets a time of 1.42.96

What a world class footballer looked like before....

New era of power tennis where the most impressive athlete grinds the rest into dust.

You only have to look at how these other sports have progressed to see that the best boxers of today would beat the **** out of the boxers of previous years....

Anybody who argues against this is an idiot.

Im not going to say Mayweather would beat fighters of the past such as Leonard or SRR.

But I will say HUMANS/ATHLETES have become stronger, faster, quicker in all aspects. Boxing is the sport where that is not recognized when comparing eras.

Although I feel it's unfair to compare era to era. (We truly dont know who would win in mythical match ups)

But when you look at Joe Louis or Rocky Marciano they wouldn't even fight at HW in todays generation.

What is a "similar" size? Could you be any more vague?

And you do realise, that we don't have to look back to the stone ages to find ATG fighters...

Do Pryor/Leonard/Duran/Chavez count as similar? I would say they do, and I would say you completely ruling them out makes you stupid.

This is also stupid because your reasoning really only applies to the heavyweights, and even then, most will say that heavy's today are much less skilled than those of the past.

Your point is well taken about how sports have progressed over the years. I dont think anyone can argue that various sports performance metrics have not only gotten considerably better over the years. Athletes are using better nutrition (some steroids as well!), better training methods, have better medical technologies around them to enhance recovery/recuperation, and most importantly perhaps, have the COLLECTIVE EXPERIENCE of the athletes before them to learn from and improve their own performance in their respective sports.

I am not going to say Mayweather could beat anybody of similar size (even though he is my favorite fighter, and I genuinely think he would at least give anybody in history major problems given his full skillset). The reason you cant make such assumptions is that in comparing eras, you have to ADJUST FOR ALL THE FACTORS I MENTIONED ABOVE and only THEN make your comparison. If Sugar Ray Robinson was around today and he had all the luxuries of modern sports training and medical advancements, imagine how good would he be then.

The bottom line is, yes, sports have advanced considerably over the years, but in comparing athletes, you must adjust for those factors and then make comparisons.

Btw, I liked your montage pictures comparing the past and present...very interesting.

George Best would own Ronaldo, you tool! In boxing as well as football your most valuable asset is your brain. Therefore your comparison is dumb.

Sports like running and all the other athletics rely on muscle groups and technique more than anything. Bolt doesn't have much thinking to do in those 9.69 seconds!

Margarito proved against Cotto the value of power, strength, stamina Vs Skill. Now just imagine a 2008 Mayweather against the physical paupers of the past.

The steps forward physically as humans we have made are the reasons Mayweather would beat anybody from the past.

Ronaldo would **** on Best. Best was a runt and a pisshead, Ronaldo is at his physical peak.

Your point is weak, hit man hears was much taller than mayweather all the muscle does is put you in a higher weight class, but you loose reach and power in most cases. longer leaner guys have more power in most cases when it comes to punching

That's a dumb argument. Hitman hearns started his career at 147. While Floyd at 147 is at his 4th weight class.

Is this a general argument on Old vs Modern fighters or is it actually Mayweather specific?
