Why McGirt's decision was understandable

Look, Malignaggi was busted up worse in the Cotto fight in many respects, but he also had more success against said opponent, and made it relatively close until the closing rounds.

A close first round aside, he was badly out of his depth tonight. He was in against the best at 140lbs and he had no answer. The only reason he wasn't floored seven or eight times was because he held literally every time a half-decent punch landed. It was, in fact, slightly troubling that he was so affected by the blows that he had to hold without fail 10, 15 times each round.

This fight, to be brutally honest, contained the biggest display of holding in a major world title fight since Henry Akinwande was DQed against Lewis. Now, I understand that Malignaggi responded in this way because he was badly hurt in the second round, but from then onwards literally his only goal was to survive, but he was still being hit consistently. While not laid flat out, he was still somewhat wilted and forced to hold by almost every shot Hatton landed.

I respect him wanting to finish the fight and can see why many believe he should've been able to finish, but McGirt would've been watching this fighter he's trained for years visibly unable to cope in any way other than ducking almost down to the floor and holding every single time landed a shot. The only way you could be more blatant about only existing in the ring to survive would be to turn your back and run, which would of course usually see you disqualified.

So yeah...I'm not sure what I think of the decision, and I'm glad Hatton won, but I can absolutely see why Buddy McGirt ended the bout. Malignaggi had actual fight left in him late into the Cotto fight, but that was completely drained out of him by the close of round two last night.

Actually, he's not. Paulie looked like **** after the he got tagged in the 2nd round. He did the holding, not Ricky. He kept leaning down and into Hatton.

He landed an average of 2.5 right hands a round, and that might have been generous, as I don't think he landed that many. By the later rounds he just wasn't actually trying anymore.

I'd fire Mcgirt. Last night Mcgirt made it about him. You let a fighter finish on his feet. you don't stop a fight liek that. Paulie was losing, but he wasn't taking a beating. You don't stop a fight because your man has no chance to win anymore. Finishing on your feet is a psychological thing fans might not understand. That goes down as a stoppage win, and I don't think Paulie was going to be stopped. !#$$# Buddy!

McGirt did the right thing. There's no reason to continue taking punches if you absolutely can't win. There was no way for Paulie to end this fight with any kind of moral victory...he looked like crap all night. Paulie had no chance of landing a massive one punch KO. I thought Paulie wanted to quit in the corner anyway, he was muttering away to his trainer for like two rounds prior. When a fighter does that it's usually because they have given up... a fighter just can't say it right out loud.

Also, now in the fighter's mind, he can make up an excuse for the loss on his trainer. Fighter's like to make up excuses, it keeps them going when they lose. Despite Paulie's feigned protest after the bout; McGirt gave Paulie a big ol' present.

Paulie was getting beaten, yes, but the fight was not to the point of needing to be stopped. No way.

How can you possibly say he should have been allowed to finish the fight when he wasn’t even fighting? Nonsense.

Easy for you guys to say let him fight, it wasn't you getting tagged. If Malignagga had been moving well and had the ability to avoid punches, sure, let him finish. But he was getting hit hard with every punch by the 11th rd. Plus, after the second round, Paulie was just looking to survive...it wasn't a fight anymore, but a beating. Some of you need to just watch hocky fighting, or UFC.

I couldn't agree moire. Mcgirt has a quick trigger and should have let Paulie finish.

Buddy told him to show him something or he was throwing in the towel. Paulie proceeded to do nothing. pBuddy threw in the towel.

There is no one to blame but Paulie himself.

Mcgirt was a World Champ. I think he knows a lil' something about the damage that can be done. Paulie was getting banged up. His face and head were covered in bruises. The late rds in fights are when fighters get hurt.
