Because all you can do is laugh at threads like these. Mercer was lucky to draw with a clubfighter in Marion Wilson "but don't count him out against Tyson!" OK buddy.
Prime for prime? Goes the distance (ain’t nobody knocking out a prime Mercer), but Tyson wins a UD due to all the clean aggression and heavy shots he’d have landed the first half. Basically, I think Tyson sweeps the first half on the cards, it’s even for a few, then Mercer wins the last few. Post-prison Tyson vs the Mercer who fought Lewis? Now that’s an interesting one. Mercer might well be able to pull that one off. He had the tools to do it. And the level of aggression and pressure he put on Lewis would be rough for Tyson to deal with.
Prime Tyson didn't gas out the way he would later post prison. What Tommy Morrison did to Mercer for 3 rounds Tyson would give it to him worse. The referee would have to intervene I'd say by 8th at the latest. Post Prison Tyson vs Mercer is an interesting fight and one his managers should of pursued if they were interested in seeing him regain his peak form. Ray would have made Mike go some rounds. Mercer would come on late and Tyson would have to dig deep. I think Mike would win but look vulnerable in doing so. Getting through that might have sparked his confidence to be the best again.
it would start like Morrison/Mercer with Mike outspeeding Mercer. But Tyson wouldn't gas if he failed to finish Mercer early. He has the ability to be economical if he has to. He would also slip a lot of Ray's shots. Wheras a gassed Morrison was stopped and an inspired Cooper was outpointed in a brutal war, Mike would finish Mercer in the mid rounds. Ray was extremely durable but his lack of defense will result in him not being able to last the distance. His face should be a grotesque mask by the middle rounds and Mike will clean up with Mercer likely still on his feet but defenseless.and no longer able to land anything.
I guess everything was fine. I agree that Mercer is not a good match for Tyson. Whitearspoon, for example, would be better for Mike. And Ray would put up a better fight than many people think. If he had caught Tyson on a bad day, he would have had a chance, but under objective circumstances, the best version of Ray would do little to the best version of Mike, who would stop him in the middle rounds, destroying his resilience and career. After 1995, when this fight was real, I think Mercer can win against Tyson.
That’s Mercer on his worst form as he was capable of producing for sure. The same Mercer in top form also gave Lennox Lewis hell and was very close to winning. It’s like saying Tyson was knocked out by Buster Douglas who couldn’t beat Dave Bey so how does he beat Michael Spinks? Fights don’t always work out in reality as it seems they should on paper.
I believe, in a prime vs. prime best of 7, Mike Tyson goes 4-0 against Ray Mercer. Ray may be stopped standing but I believe he will be stopped.
Mike would win a lopsided decision, though he'd take some really hard shots along the way. It would be competitive, but just enough for Mercer to walk away with his head held high.
I can't see Mercer beating Tyson. OK wait, I guess I'd take Mercer if it was an old post prison version of Tyson vs the Mercer that beat Cooper.
