The biggest problem with AJ's rematch performance (aside from the optics, which matter in certain respects) was probably the lack of closure; it wouldn't have felt like real vengeance for possibly the most humiliating defeat ever. He'd "stolen" (his own word to describe Wlad-Fury) the belts back against the obese diminutive Mexican but didn't exorcise the demons. The confidence and killer instinct have been waning post-Wlad but it was even more clear post-Ruiz 1. Maybe brutally knocking out the untrained Ruiz would have helped AJ psychologically but at the same time an aggressive strategy was seen as borderline suicidal by his team. Rock and a hard place I guess. To each their own. I don't deny that a 25-2 AJ for undisputed would be a top scalp, historically significant for sure but the bout just doesn't have the lustre of Fury-Usyk to me.
Oh, we're in accord on that. At the time of writing, Fury-Usyk is the most creditable possible bout for Fury (yet I heavily favor him there, too). Should Usyk lose this rematch, we end up short of a clearly defining generational rival for Fury.
