Long time member, been away for a while. Mixed Martial Arts or MMA as it is known to the public is unquestionably forceing itself into the mainstream media's mind. fighters such as pacquiao and mayweather are over shadowed by chuck liddell and GSP. see any gatorade commercials with a boxer latley? but that is not WHY M.M.A is takeing over, its simply exhibit A that the takeover is indeed happening. As an amature boxer for the past 11 years and as a semi professional Mixed Martial Artist I can tell you from experience why I belive pro boxing is loosing and will loose to MMA or more particularly to the U.F.C. The reason is simple: The biggest and best fights in MMA are fights we get to see. When everyone wanted Ortiz and Liddell? Dana white made it happen. When everyone wanted Couture and Liddell? Dana White made it happen. When everyone wanted BJ Penn and GSP? Dana White made it happen....twice. currently everyone wants to see Lesner and a real number 1 contender...and Dana White is in the middle of makeing it happen!!!! Pacquiao Vs Mayweather Wlad VS Vitali Haye VS....either of them these are fights wich would generate signifigant interest in the world of boxing today. but they wont happen..... why? Simply put: the world of MMA is designed that the best fighters in the world will fight one another on a consistant basis. and in boxing we have to pray and wait and pray and wait and then? someone wants an over the top drug test to go through with it..... I believe as a combatant in both sports that boxing and not MMA can and often times does have a more explosive and more entertaining package than MMA..... the problem is simply that the world of boxing is so convoluted that rather then encourage the best to fight each other, often the santioning bodys of the sport will strip a fighter is he would rather fight a great fighter. take Tarver - Johnson for instance. that fight SHOULD have been to prove who was the best lightweight in the world (at the time mind you) and it did prove that, but both fighters had to give up there "belts" to make it happen. what kind of sport would take something away from a match between the two best of the sport? Boxing is in a sad state in todays main stream media. in order for Boxing to survive and flourish it needs serious changes, and a santioning body that will reward fighters for fighting the best and not strip them of there belts. What boxing needs is a singular figure to say "okay Wlad, Vitali? I know you dont WANT to fight each other, but your the best in the world and its what the people demand to see, as of right now your popular, but if you wont fight each other, one of you will have to fight Haye, and then the other will have too....by the way both these fights have to happen this year...good luck figureing it out" or to say "well floyd, I understand your concern but we have this santioned tests we do, you and pac will be huge, its what the people want, you can either A fight him or B, we'll burry you on an undercard somewhere and everyone will forget about you in a few years." yes its harsh, yes it would take some getting used too, but in the end the greatest sport on the planet would be back where it belongs : the forefront of the sporting world. the same way it was when Robinson fought. the same way it was when joe Louis fought. when Ali and even Leonard were our "kings of the ring". and we need that because as of right now....Boxing is loosing momentum, you can argue with whatever stats you want but the fact is that more people you know have heard of GSP and want to talk about him than Mayweather, Hopkins, Pacquiao, or anyone else we love. Boxing needs a santioning body who will make the best fight the best.... if that ever happens, we'll see champions in Gatorade commercials again. Gatorade, ESPN, and sportscenter .... thats what sports is all about people...and boxing needs a piece of it...or it will not thrive. Thank you for your time.
You need to take an ESL class, and you need to do some research on actual PPV numbers. Boxing is outdoing the UFC all day.
whats ESL? and I do see the PPv numbers. every now and again boxing will have the best fight the best and the PPV numbers will be off the charts (as I've explained Boxing IS a better product) but the UFC has a descent PPV once or twice a month, and boxing has a great PPV buy-rate once every what? 4-6 months?
Okay now tell us something we don't know. :-( What you are asking for will never happen. The sanctioning bodies will never disappear and one reing supreme. It just won't happen. Too much money, power and politics involved.
men lie, women lie, numbers dont lie...boxing is just fine especially in the financial dept...3 years ago the biggest fight in history took place...furthermore there were 2 back to back ppv buys with floyd-jmm and pac-cotto that did 1 million or more...boxing is doing just fine...
Lesnar v Fedor. Dana White failed to make it happen. Listen I'm an MMA fan but lets not kid ourselves and think the UFC only make fights fans wanna see. Coleman v Coture as a main event was a disgrace. Nobody wanted to see that crap. Liddell v Ortiz again is another joke. two fighters over the hill. UFC will always find it easier to make fights as the fighters dont have a choice do they? They work for the UFC and Dana White is there boss. Its unfair to make a comparison with boxing as boxing will never be run where one organisation controls the fighters. Rubbish PPV cards with some BS fights. UFC run to many shows. Only takes a few injuries and things get ****ed up.
dana white makes fights happen cause he own the whole product and keeps most of the money. He doesnt have anything to lose because whoever wins still works for him. In boxing fighters are promoted by different people so fights are harder to make. Since a promorter knows his boxers are his product so he needs to make sure he keeps them marketable. Also MMA is not taking over anything this is just a fab that will die down over time. :hat
MMA isn't taking over. Not even close to, the only thing competing with boxing is, UFC. And that's only slightly, thats an org that can put together whatever fights they want and not worry about other belts or orgs. They own their fighters. MMA does not favor the fighter business wise. Nearly every fighter is signed to a multi fight contract with a company and they are stuck with that company till it's done. BOxing, fighter signs a 1 fight deal.
growing up, UFCs target audience are teen age boys who are just coming out of that wwe phase a lot of us go through, im not the really an mma guy but if i was im sure id prefer strikeforce or something a bit more professional then UFC
Boxing is the #1 sport on the internet, and the internet is a bigger media machine than TV now. Also, boxing still holds the records for PPV sales. Boxing is world wide. MMA is mainly USA and Japan phenomenons.
Hey gentlemen dont get mistaken. I WANT boxing to be back at the pinacle, I WANT boxing to a bigger part of the mainstream media's mindframe. I dont belive and diddnt say that MMA or the UFC was perfect or that it was better, or that it made more money. but what would your everyday person rather talk about? what story would Sportscenter run first? and again I'll ask whos on the gatorade commercials? I perform in both sports, and I prefer boxing though I'm probably a little better at MMA. I realise its not something thats just arround the corner, but thats what people said about blacks playing baseball, thats what everyone said about the UFC being on TV, or doing a million PPV buys. and does anyone think boxing wouldnt be better off with a system where the best fought the best? Gees fellas you seem to all think I'm some boxing hater, all I'm saying is that boxing would be better off.
Well MMA has actually took a downturn in Japan. It went through a huge boom period but the fight industry in Japan has been in decline. K-1 kickboxing is still huge though and doing v well.
They keep pounding the idea in our head like anything else. I was talking to a guy about boxing when another guy jumped in and said "are you talking about boxing", like it was something bad. He went on to say he watches MMA and I went on to school him. He had about the same amount of knowedge about the MMA as he did boxing and that was very little. He was just a follower of the MMA fad / boxing is dead. THERE IS NOTHING WORSE THAN WATCHING 2 GRAPLERS DRY HUMPING EACHOTHER FOR 15 MINUTES AND NOT BEING ABLE TO PUT EACHOTHER IN A FINISHING MOVE. I perfer a boring boxing match to a boring MMA match anyday. The MMA guys I like watching are the ones who act like boxers (strikers).
Basically this post says boxing would be better if the best fought the best. No ****. boxing doesn't have the benefit of one person running the sport. If MMA is for real then eventually another company will compete with the ufc and they will have the same problems. MMA is in its infancy. Don't know if it will grow up and survive. What I do know is boxing is doing just fine. Also, I don't want to see the K bros fight and there is not a big movement behind that concept as far as i am aware.
