Why must Cotto continuously prove himself??

    What's up people. I'm just curious as to why so many people, MOSTLY FLOYD FANS, say that Cotto must keep proving himself in order to fight Floyd.

    From my understanding, like in any other sport, I thought that when you are a challenger, you fight your way to the top spot to get a shot at the champion (who by the way must also be taking other challenges in the meantime).

    When Cotto entered the welterweight division, FLoyd was already #1. Cotto was near the bottom at the time. At this time, Cotto's critics said that in order to deserve a shot, he needed to defeat fighters like margarito, paul williams, or shane mosley to deserve a shot.

    Let's see, Margarito was beaten by Paul. Paul was beaten by Quintana. Cotto in the meantime, spanks Quintana & Judah and defeats Mosley.

    No one can say that Cotto is not the clear cut #2 welterweight out there today. With that said, why does he still have to prove himself against the # 4,5, & 6 fighters in the division to get a shot at floyd. Cotto has already fought his way to the top.

    I believe that people want to see Cotto lose so that they can feel justified in saying that he hasnt earned his shot, where the truth is he has earned it more than any one else.

    All this BS about Cotto needs to clean out the division is obsurd. Shouldnt the champion want to clean out the division? At the least Floyd can be fighting one of the top welterweights at least once a year. He hasnt even done that much since being a welterweight.

    Anyways, I know this topic is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy old, but whatever. There is nothing else to talk about.

    because floyd fans and floyd himself want to keep as much distance between him and cotto as possible

    the man fought brussles right? .. why? ..keep busy fight right? .. right... put mayweather in there with cotto then to ..uh...keep busy... if cotto is such an unproven fighter ...

    floyd had a chance to make the fight ....he wanted to wrestle then take on a part time boxer instead ...mean while cotto is tearing a black hole right through the division ..

    you're lieing to yourselves if you think cotto is ducking money

    Fans if you want to see Cotto vs Floyd it's really very very easy. Do not order DLH vs Mayweather 2. Next time Cotto fights PPV order that ****. Done deal

    PBF is off fighting DLH again and doing pro wrestling

    call it whatever you want to call it, but PBF is the reason the fight isnt happening, not Cotto

    can we stop calling mayweather the attraction?? how about now??

    he fights oscar delahoya .. the biggest under 200 pound attraction too date .. but some how mayweather brought those fans in ...

    he fights ricky hatton ...one of the worlds most popular fighters ... tooons off hatton fans come acrossed the pond to drowned out the 6 people in mayweathers crew that came out to watch him ..

    mayweather brought those fans too according to him ...

    then mayweather goes on perhaps one of the biggest forums to get your name out .. rock bands have used the wwe ...movie stars .. legends...sport stars ... but aparently mayweather is the one who brought the show ...

    riiiiiiiiiiiight ...lie to your self darkness & darknesses this cat can't attract fat people to dennys ... lets stop pretending for once

    Cotto has to do more than beat some up and comers along w/ Judah & Mosley.

    There are other guys that are proven that Cotto must fight in order to land a fight with Floyd.

    He can't have the resume he has and expect to land a fight w/ PBF.

    It's absurd, isn't it JL? Mayweathers boasts are ringing more hollow everyday that he doesn't sign to fight Cotto. It goes without saying that Miguel deserves the shot after beating Mosely. Just ask yourself, "has Mayweather beaten anyone of the stature of Shane Mosely"? Sure, Floyds wins over Corrales and Castillio are good accomplishments, but they're ancient history. Floyd beat Oscar, but the inactive DLH lost twice to Mosley. Yeah, theres the Hatton win, but wasn't Rickys mediocrity at 147 well documented since he fought Collazo?
    Two good wins long ago and a snotty attitude don't make an all time great. If Floyd wants to be a movie star , or a wrestler, or a Physics teacher, fine. If he wants to be an Hall of Fame fighter, time to put the ink on the contract next to Cotto's. Otherwise, he's just Roy Jones the Third, all time great cherry picker lounmouth.

    I would never say FLoyd is ducking Cotto. I completely understand the fact that boxing is a business and you want to make money. I just dont agree with the reason/excuse that Floyd/Floyd fans give for not fighting Cotto now.

    Floyd says there isnt enough money in a Cotto fight. That is completely absurd.

    Then to back FLoyd's crazy statements, his fans come and say that Cotto needs to clean out the division to gain popularity. That doesnt make sense, nor will it make Cotto more popular to the general public.

    Think about it, no one out side of the boxing community knows who margarito, kermit, or Paul Williams is. Every one knows Zab, Shane and Oscar.

    So how exactly would Cotto defeating Margarito help further promote a fight with Floyd. For boxing fans, it would simply mean that FLoyd has 0 options. But from a money point of view, this won't sell more tickets b/c the general public will not be impressed that Cotto beat some guy named Margarito who already has 5 losses.

    All the general public needs to know is that Cotto beat Zab and Mosley b/c him beating anyone else will no affect how more or less the non-boxing/casual fan will think of him. If they dont know him by now, then chances are, they wont know him later until he fights Floyd.

    Again, I dont think Floyd is ducking him, but I just think his excuses dont make sense at all. They dont make sense financially or from a legacy point of view.

    If anything Floyd is risking his final large payday. Think about it. The only large paydays Floyd has left outside of a rematch with DLH or Hatton is a fight with Cotto. So if Cotto loses, a lot of the hype will then be lost. Even if Cotto loses and then redeems himself, the general public/casual fan will not be as interested b/c Cotto would no longer be undefeated.

    Every one knows that the non boxing fans only cares about knockouts and undefeated records. Without Cottos undefeated record, the fight wont sell as much.

    Actually the fans are the ones to blame. Everyone knew that DLH vs Mayweather was a joke and everyone bought it anyway. Everyone knows that the second one is a joke and while everyone is claiming that they will not buy it, they will change their mind as the fight aproaches. Anyone who was stupid enough to pay for these fights has absolutly 0 right to complain about the Cotto fight being made.
