What you got to understand about boxing, is that plaudits focus on the current heros.

When Tyson was dominant, he was the "greatest heavyweight of all time". Being compared to Ali.

When Jones was dominant, he was being talked about with guys like Leonard and Duran.

Mayweather and Pacquiao get the same. It's there time in the sun.

Truth is, once guys retire, hype dies, and the media finds other people to hype, you've just got your resume, and video for people to watch, and that's when these lists get done.

There's a simple argument for every fighter in the current top 25, in my opinion.

Not only have they beaten the (other) dominant superstar of their era, but most of them have actually done it a few times. When you start getting into the top 10 you have guys who have done it 5-6 times.

By that I mean, they've stepped up and beaten fighters, of their era, of the equivilant of Floyd or Manny. And done it multiple times.

I honestly think, once the hype dies down, there will be a much better argument to have Roy Jones in a top 25 than either Manny or Floyd (at the minute).

    Look at the facts.

Beat the two best fighters of his own era, in Toney and Hopkins. Two elite, hall of fame guys.

    Dominated middleweight
    Dominated super middleweight
Possibly in the argument as the greatest light heavyweight of all time.
First middleweight in 105 years to win a heavyweight title.
Beat something like 18 current or former world champions
At least 4, lock, Hall of Fame fighters on his resume
Basically unbeaten from 1989-2003 (taking away a disqualification) over 4 weight classes.

You know, every dog has it's day.

when pac retires i do not think his hype will die down. imo, boxing fans, writers and editors will be kind to him and his legend will grow. i cannot say the same with floyd until he takes the challenges that is required off him.

    i think Pac's top 25 man....he has a very solid resume 8 titles from 106-154 i mean its goes on and on....no way he's not top 25...

Now Floyd for me is 26-30.....he beats Pac he cracks my top 25 and again for him to move up any further he's gotta face some stiff COMP!

Man, you're probably in for a rude awakening. 50% of Pacquiao's current status is just a friendly media, who talk him up, as it makes them money.

Soon as he retires, he'll do well to stay at the current level he is.

Man, Pacquiao is very overrated. Mayweather very underrated.

Floyd whups Mosely - the media don't care

Manny whups Margarito - he's the greatest fighter ever.

Man, he's top 25 while the spotlight is on him. No way his resume (at the minute) keeps him there.

To put it bluntly, his career win isn't any better than mayweathers

    Man, that's really the issue.

Clottey, Margarito is considered "stiff comp" for Pacquiao. As they're competitive fights.

Mayweather's spent an entire career outclassing that level of opponent

Man, all the media are worried about is getting web hits.

ESPN was pretty critical of Pacquiao until he got to a certain fame level

are we talking here about cross-over popularity or him being honored by the hard-core boxing fans? it doesn't matter if pac will not be known in the future but his name will echo more with the boxing hardcore's than floyd. he has done more legendary things than floyd has done thus he would be rated higher.

and even if you are talking mainstream popularity, i think pac's place in history is secured. if not in america, at least in his own country.

The TS got it wrong, Pac is in the discussion for top 25, sometimes even at top 15 or top ten. But Mayweather doesn't even figure in anyone's discussion of top 30. ****en lol. nice try though

why are we so worried about the rankings? they're still both fighting. leave this to when they actually retire. by then we'll have a clearer view. wait for the dust to settle gents.

I definitely agree with the TS. When Duran, Leonard, and Hearns were fighting each other they were at their peaks or close to it. They were the creme of the crop. Can't really say that for any of Floyds or Manny's recent victims. Floyd should be in the top 40 and Manny in the top 30. Both are impressive fighters, but that's why they need to fight each other or a Sergio Martinez or Paul Williams or at least an Andre Berto if they want to get ranked any higher in my list. Ain't no easy way and it seems to me that's all they've been doing or make it look like, especially Floyd. The outcomes are becoming too predictable which says alot about their opposition.

leonard fought all different styles even those opponents that would trouble him

Pac is impressive for his weight jumping no doubt but they are matching him up with the guys that best fit his style. I mean the margo win is impressive but they picked the guy who they knew would eat all the shots and ask for more, its an opponent picked they know will make pac look impressive landing his power shots.

Floyd has been too inactive to compare with srl and hasnt taken on the challenges that are available. he may not have a hearns, duran hagler to fight but he has by his own admission focused only on money fights and not the fights which would add to his legacy

pac has already fought fellow ATG and has his own version of mini-fab4 back in his featherweight days. pac fought barrera-morales-marquez a total of 7 times and is 5-1-1 against them.
