I saw watched some Vasquez/Marquez highlights on Youtube. It looks like they held this (or the third fight at least) at a tennis stadium in Southern California. Wouldn't this fight have sold big time in Mexico? Could they fill up Azteca Stadium or any number if smaller venues? Or is boxing a sport for Mexican Americans? Do they want middle class Mexican nationals to travel to the fights?

Why are the big Mexican fights held in the USA? Same time zone, so TV is not an issue.

Right, but I guess I am questioning this logic economically.

100,000 seats vs. 10,000 seats is the issue I am bringing to the table.

"How many tickets did Maskaev-Peter sell (with Diaz-Campbell on the undercard)?"

I am thinking about MAB/EM, Vasquez/Marquez etc. None of the fighters on that list are Mexican nationals.

What's the Mexican peso to US dollar exchange rate?

If they ever set up big time international fights in Mexico, I bet it will only be once or twice a year, at most. Tickets can be expensive.

When Pac vs Larios was staged in Manila, I wanted to watch it live, but was too damn expensive. It was ridiculously priced. Working class pinoys could never afford that price.

I could afford it, if I really wanted to, but the price just isnt worth it.

Maybe it's the same situation in Mexico.

Ok, I think you may have hit it right there. For a fight to pay off it has to pay off in dollars.

I guess that if I were a promoter I would drool over the idea of thousands upon thousands of rabid fans paying to watch a fight -- something that won't happen to the same extent in America for a fight between two non-Americans. But you may have made the right counter argument.

The exchange rate between dollar and peso is rougly 11 pesos= 1 dollar.

I just had a quick check, and I read that in 2005, the average annual income in Mexico is around US$6,000.

How much does an average ringside ticket for a bigtime fight cost in Vegas?

Right, I know the income is lower..... I am just thinking about 10x the fans -- and fans who are much more motivated to show up.

But as I think about it I can see why a 15,000 fan event staged in America is less risky. Big money made on the HBO or PPV. Easier to set up, and much more money per seat. Ok, I guess I don't have the next big idea in boxing promotions :)
