Cervantes was the perfect sized Jr. Welterweight at 5'9".

Kinda like Wilfredo Gomez was the perfect sized Jr. Featherweight.

Why no Cervantes vs Duran fight in the mid 70's?

Did the WBA just not want to have one of their "super stars" lose?

(Interesting note that Wilfred Benetiz beat both of them)

They were scheduled at one point but Duran pulled out.

Duran's management didn't want the fight, but Duran was game and he would have fought him. Same thing with a Buchanan rematch.

I think Duran ate too many pies to stay at light welterweight.

The way Duran went after Leonard tells me all I need to know about Duran/Cervantes.

You talking about Cervantes moving up and fighting Napoles at welter?

And then there is SRL vs Duran 2, when SRL swift afoot, just moves all around Duran and peppers Duran until Duran quits......with SRL saying "I should have fought this way in Montreal"

Someone needs to write a good Napoles biography.

Duran skipped over the Jr Welterweight entirely. Duran had to fight a legitimate Welter weight to prove he could fight in the higher weight division. So he fought Palomino.
