Yeah, the first one was one-sided but not that one sided. And, of course, he dropped Louis and outfought him in small patches. And Braddock was a national hero at the time, there must have been serious money in that fight.

Couldn't blame Braddock if he didn't fancy it, ended up with something like 50 stitches in his face:

But then again this is not in keeping with his "heart of a lion" persona (earned).

Anyone know why there was no rematch?

    Anyone got any direct quotes?

Good question actually. I haven't really thought about it, but I expect that Braddock, having secured a percentage of Louis' earnings from future fights and having being paid handsomely for their fight, didn't see the sense in persuing what in all likelihood would have been another KO loss.

Braddock's deal, i believe, entitled him to title fights staged at the Garden, rather than Louis's fights per se.

That's certainly how I would see things.

    Here's the full deal:

$500,000 for Braddock, or half the gate and broadcast revenues, whichever was greater, and 10% of Mike Jacob's net profits from promoting heavyweight title fights over the next decade, regardless of whether Louis was champion or not.

Incidently, Braddock and Gould received annual payments from Jacobs of $150,000.

Not surprising Braddock never persued a rematch.

Yeah, that's more like what I remember. But because Louis monopolised the title for so long that sort of morphed into 10% of Louis's purses.

So Braddock was set for life (if ever anyone deserved it, he did), but there are other reasons to fight than money. Whatever compelled him to take on Farr, for example.

There is no reason to rematch a guy who just kicked the **** out of you, when you are already entitled to part of his future earnings. :smoke

    I'll give you 2.

1 - The HW title of the world

2 - Braddock dropped Louis in the first.

But more than likely it was a money thing, yeah. If anyone has any direct quotes about the fight, i'd surely love to read them though.

Well they are two of my favourites for one thing, but it was Patterson who got me thinking about it. He lost in a more one-sided fight than this, but he took a chance. Also, I was thinking about Patterson being the first man to reclaim the title, and the failures of other men to do so. What with a re-match being normal regardless of the one-sidedness of the first fight, I just wondered why this one never came about.

That percentage of future earnings was a mind-boggling deal.
Why on earth did Louis' management ever agree to it??? :patsch

Because title shots don't grow on trees; especially when you're black in the 30's.
